Just realized something different bout the '04

Hope this isn't a repost; I was looking at G's on cardomain, and the automatic shift for the '04 is different than the older models. It looks like the Z, better than the older one.

G35x finally here! Black on graphite, premium, spoiler

Yes, its been covered before; the shift **** in the G35x (only) is from the FX series.

I think you're wrong. This is a 2004 coupe.

The manual mode also acts different. The '04 sedan acts like the coupe and FX, where the '03 sedan does the top-gear-selector thing.

My '04 Sedan does the "top gear" thing, so not sure that's right!

Re: Just realized something different bout the '04

Noticed it too. I was very upset when I first tested the '04 G35 sedan and noticed that the manumatic mode shifting wasn't doing what it was supposed to (like in our '03 FX35 - where it automatically shifts down for you all the way to 1st gear and the manumatic mode registers it in 1st gear - which makes sense so you can always start out in 1st gear in manumatic mode). It was automatically shifting down, but the manumatic mode remained in the last gear you had it in, so it acted like automatic mode, shifting up until it got to that particular gear (then it was in manumatic mode), which was stupid, IMHO.

...but then, I got my '04 G35 5AT (RWD) Sedan this month, and noticed the shifter was just like our FX35, and yes, the manumatic mode acted like our FX35 and did what it was supposed to. My Infiniti Service Advisor and I came to the conclusion that the engineers at Infiniti changed the transmission a few months after initial production of the '04 G35s. I was very happy that I got the updated 5AT manumatic transmission. It makes much more sense to do it this way ;-)

It may have been a change recently. Like an '04.5 type thing.

Personally, I don't like the newer style, either, where it shifts down through the gears as you slow down and drops the number.

A true manumatic would stay in whatever gear you put it in, period, except to automatically drop back to 1st after coming to a complete stop. And it would let you start from a stop in 2nd.

Re: Just realized something different bout the '04

That's insane. Why would you want to risk starting off in anything but 1st gear? I'm sure you would be embarrassed if you did start off in 3rd gear due to a mistake on your part. The car would probably bog down & die or ping a whole lot. Either wouldn't be great for the car.
My auto (2004.5) drops down as I slow down but not very fast. I have plenty of time to control the gear selection manually. I do appreciate my car sitting in 1st gear when I do hit a complete stop. Think of all the ratcheting motion you are preventing on the shift lever by not having to drop down each gear every time you come to a stop.

Re: Just realized something different bout the '04

Most cars have no trouble starting in 2nd gear. You do it when you need less torque on the wheels under slippery conditions.. such as icy or snowy roads, where 1st gear would just spin the tires needlessly. A G35 has way more than enough power to get moving in 2nd gear. Most other manufacturer's auto-manuals and normal automatic transmissions allow this. (D - D3 - 2 - 1, for instance - 2 is 2, not D2.)

Re: Just realized something different bout the '04

As far as I'm concerned (and my Infiniti Service Advisor agrees), the 2004.5 5AT Manumatic transmission works the way it should. This is now the exact same way the FX35 and G35 Coupe manumatic transmission acts; which is why Infiniti updated the G35 Sedan's 5AT transmission. In addition, before I puchased the 2004 G35, I also test drove the 2004 Acura TL and it's manumatic acted the same way; it automatically shifts down (if you don't) coming to a stop and the manumatic mode registers it as going down to 1st gear, so you start out (manually) in 1st gear. I usually drive in manumatic - upshifting from 1st-2nd-3rd-4th or 5th, then down shift to 3rd, slowing to a red light or stop sign, letting the car automatically shift down from 3rd to 2nd and 1st. Then, it's still in manumatic mode for me to go from 1st gear.

Again, the old way didn't register it in 1st gear; it automatically went down but acted like the automatic mode until you reached the gear your manumatic display reads...this to me just wasn't right, and it appears the Infiniti engineers agree so they changed it.

...not sure if you were mocking me or what, but my reference to the TL was just for comparison purposes. ;-) Notice how I also mentioned that our 2004.5 G35 5AT Sedan manumatic transmission now works exactly like the G35 Coupe and FX35 (which is my wife's car - w/ tech package). Although the TL was in fact a nice car, it wasn't up to par with the G35 and it's still basically a front-wheel drive Honda Accord ;-)

Does anyone know the parts or the chip number of the 04.5 transmission ecu?
