New member interested in a G35

Hey guys, new to the forum and have a few questions regarding the G35 sedan and one that I am interested in. First off I want a car that is reliable. Is the G35 a reliable car. I had a Lexus IS300 and it was reliable, am I wrong in the assumption that most Japanese cars are reliable? Another important thing for me is gas mileage, not a huge thing but I don't want a gas guzzler. Is the G35 decent on gas? Is there anything to look for when buying a used G35? One problem for finding one for me is that I insist that it is a 6 speed manual, which appears to be hard to find.

I have found one that is very close to me that is in my price range that seems almost too good to be true. It is a 2005 sedan with a six speed (perfect). Seems to have all options (including nav, which isn't important to me), and only 32,000 miles! The price they are asking is 17,995. Compared to others I have seen it seems to be a great deal, but is it too good? Is there possibly something wrong with this car? If this is not too good can I do any better? What would be a good number to offer them?

Thanks for the help guys, hope to own one soon!

Wow, a '05 6MT sedan w/ 32K miles asking less than $18K is unbelievable. I'd go check it out right away, test drive to make sure there are no funny or weird unexpected noises, and inquire to the previous owner regarding past service history of the car (and documented records if he/she has them). Since you as a potential buyer have the upper hand, I would try to bargain down the price based on your impressions and what you found out about the car.

I'd agree that most if not all Japanese imports are pretty reliable. Before I owned the G, I was a longtime Lexus owner for 10 years (went through 2 Lexus cars). They hardly break down and with routine maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, etc., these cars will last over 200-300K miles easy.

As far as fuel mileage, the G35 with the auto tranny gets 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg in the highway (the G35 with M/T gets more improved numbers than them). I get on average 21 mpg with mixed city/hwy driving (70% and 30% respectively). Strictly highway driving would result in 23-25 mpg on average (depending on A/C use, use of lead foot, etc.)

if you feel questionable about the car's history even after you get a written record, you should ask the owner if you can take the car into a mechanic shop (local Firestone or something) to have it checked out before you buy. 05 6mt for 18 k with only 32k miles sounds outstanding heh better jump on that ^^

Mileage will be ok I guess, but not ideal. So this is a great deal and I should jump all over it? Lets say hypothetically I check it out, test drive, everything seems to be ok, and the records are in order, what would be a reasonable number to throw out to start the bargaining? Would 16,000 be unreasonable? I wanted to keep the price closer to 15, but this looks too good to be true (still has factory warranty!!).

Well seems to be a badass deal, I am going to get by ther asap to drive it and give him an offer. After some thought the most I can spend with my resources is 17500, so I am hoping to at least talk him down to that number out the door with TTL included, is this reasonable? Thanks guys

Yea you can't go wrong with reliability buying an Acura, Lexus or Infiniti. G35 is however is not only reliable but alot of fun to drive. MPG could be better, but heck no one is perfect, not even the G35.

Definitely jump on that deal!

I had an IS300 before I got my G. My G got better gas mileage, is quicker, bigger and cheaper on insurance. The only things I miss from my IS300 is the lower seating position and the brighter HIDs.

The price is about right for private party (is it private party?). Probably $1k-$1500 over wholesale.

Is it safe to assume all japanese cars are reliable? No.
In my experience, Mitsubishi has produced some pretty horrible stuff. Not everything they make is bad, don't get me wrong, but they have put out some crapola. Mazda has also had some problems. Mostly due to Ford transmissions, however. There are other examples. Every manufacturer has their good and bad cars.

Well, I inquired about the car and it has a sale pending, which sucks. But there is another one close by with a manual transmission, 56k on the odo, 05, does not have navi. They are asking 17,500 for that one. Very close in price to the silver gray one I was first interested in, but obviously has 20k more miles. I should be able to talk them down on this one right?

Vegas79, you mentioned that the g35 is less insurance than the is300, that is awesome!

Comparison

Also for comparison, two weeks ago I bought my 04 5AT premium (no nav) 62,000 miles, with 1 yr old tires, 3 day old brakes (yes 3 days), and extended 100,000 mile b2b warranty for $14,000 plus TTL private party.

Sweet ride.
