Question on Auto Trans service

I have looked up and searched on the site for service info and found a bunch so I think I have that part covered. My question is...is there a filter to change out on the service for the auto transmission? I have not read of any on this site...but want to make sure before I start this process. I have a 2004 G35 sedan (auto/2wd) with 78K and not sure of the service history on it.

By the way the transmission is running flawless....great car!

Thanks for the help,

B

I've never heard of an auto transmission filter (although I've never owned a car with an auto). Do you intend to do the work yourself, and if so do you have a factory service manual or a Haynes manual? If there were a filter, both of those should mention it in the transmission service section.

I plan to do the work myself...and I have the print-out of the service manual for a 2004 G35. But no mention of a filter. On my other cars with autos....they have a replacement filter in the pan. Just wondering if anyone here has dropped the pan for a service?

the transmission does not have a traditional filter. there is a mesh screen that should be cleaned if you drop the pan. it would only need replacement if it damaged or torn. my previous vq30 had the same screen and i simply took it down to spray with brake cleaner. i plan on doing a drain, then drop the pan to clean the screen and magnets then refilling.

Thanks for the info...I think I will just drain and fill for a few times (this month and next to clean out the old fluid) and then do the pan drop next time.

Thanks again,

Update

Well I changed the Diff fluid....it looked brand new....super clear! I also changed the tranny fluid and it was a dark red...didn't smell burnt...just dark red. Over all it was very easy and I plan to change it the way I just did....drain and fill for the next 3 changes. I plan to change it again in a week and two weeks after that...to get the fluid to mix and clean since it had not been changed in a while. Great site with lots of help!

Are you using Matic-J fluid? Or just regular AT fluid?

I am using Castrol Import ATF (made for Honda, Nissan, and Toyota) It's an equivalent to Matic-J. I made sure it was good to use in the transmission...after so many have Harped on other for not using Matic-J. Even heard of Dealerships using it.
