You're right in the fact that you'd have to buy an "older" car to get better paint, regardless of the make, because the paints of the past few years (mostly water-based) have been weak due to government mandated environmental concerns. Don't blame the "G", when talking with various people about the clear bra before I bought it (consumers as well as installers), weak/crappy paint seems to be a common theme amongst all brands - it's just luxury or near luxury owners who complain the most, thinking (correctly) that for their extra $ they should get paint that is a "cut above".
Don't recall where (think Motor Trend), but read recently that the "next generation" paints are being perfected now, will have some sort of microscopic ceramic particles that "bond" together somehow and form a "shield" within the paint that will harder and more durable than any automotive paint ever used. Let's see.
