Exclamation Front End noise - After car sits 5hrs or more

I have a 2003 G35 Sedan automatic with 56,000 miles on it. When ever the car has been sitting for about 5 hours or more (overnight, afterwork etc) and I put the car into drive and go about 50 feet I'll then hear a wrrrring sound from the front of the car (lasts about 1 second). It sort of sounds like a gear turning with worn out teeth before it engages (hard to describe). The car is still in first gear and has not tried to engage into second. I only hear this sound once after that the car drives perfectly with no other sounds. Could it be the Power Steering pump? Any ideas would be appreciated - thx.

Mines pretty loud as well and if there is people standing around when you drive off it can be somewhat embarassing.

Are you talking about the spsh squish sound or something else entirely? I don't think a safety check is embarrassing. Maybe it's just me...

Why would a safety check be embarassing?? I was talking about the worn out gear teeth grinding sound that the op was referring to. Mine is very audible as are many other X owners and when you have a vehicle as classy as ours; yes it can be kind of embarassing to have a bystandard thinking how nice your car looks driving off only to hear what sounds like a mechanical failure to the layman.

That's why I asked. The way everyone seems to be explaining it, it sounds like the normal quiet sound that I hear every morning. Doesn't seem like an issue. I'd like to hear the sound that you are referring to.

That's funny you mentioned that, I was actually just thinking of trying to record the sound. Personally I can live w/ it.........as long as nobody is around when I drive off lol.

dude, if you're that worried about it just get a PA system and say "that noise you heard that makes you think this otherwise nice car is a POS, is just a system check" Or try "system check, Azz Whole" for short.

3:22 seconds and forward is kinda funny.

The reason I posted this question was because I owned a 2003 350z Touring Edition and it had a similar sound but it was very quiet and hardly noticable at all. I can certainly live with it but it would be nice to know the location of where the sound originates from. If someone could post an image that would be ideal. By the way I enjoyed reading Texan1's 3 options!
