Why is my car so slow?

I went to the track today and was shocked at how slow it was. I ran a best of 15.0@92mph. I have a Z-pipe and the stock resonator replaced by a shorter one ( exhaust is now audible vs. the stock nothingness ).

One thing I noticed is that the car is a total slug launching. I powerbraked to the highest permissable rpm and it still would launch very sluggish. Best 60' was a high 2.2. Stall speed seems to be kinda low ( maybe 2000ish? ) which I find to be too low for an engine with low rpm torque to begin with...

Is there anything that could be "wrong" with my car? I changed plugs and put a new stock replacement airfilter ( fram ) in it. I know it's not a K&N but I've had fram before with good results so I don't know what to think.

Any ideas?

are you running with vdc off?
are you on d or manumatic?
do you have a full tank or 1/4 tank or less of premium gas?
spare tire in?
are you heavy set?

spare tire in? yes, forgot to take it out
are you heavy set? If you mean me being fat then no...lol. I weigh 170.
are your tires bad? No, as a matter of fact they were so good I couldn't even chirp them off the line.
The car feels pretty strong but off the line it was the suck. Is 92mph good or bad for a near stock car?

Yea, thats pretty good trap speed.

Seems low though. You would think your in the high 14s.

Also, what elevation are you running at?

That's a big one. Elevation, humidity, barometric pressure and air temp make a huge difference. Best thing to do is calculate your Density Altitude. I always do when I go to the track.

Also... next question is do you have aftermarket wheels? These will slow you down if they are heavier.

FWIW, I run mid-high 14's with my mildly modded 1992 Taurus SHO with 156k miles.

I know these cars are faster than that.

What was the date, track, and city?

Every track is different. My 03 5AT did 14.3@98mph with a Z-tube, but the conditions were good (close to sea level).

See...that just makes me sad...LOL.

My track is in Carolina, PR. The Name is Carolina Speedway and the date was 01/10/09. I don't know how to get the track info though so I don't know the altitude and what not. PR is normally very humid as it is a tropical island but yesterday wasn't too bad.

As for the wheels...they are stock.

My previous car was a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP that bone stock ran exactly the same 15.0@92mph. The only difference is that with less than $1000 I ran 13.4@102mph...LOL. After that I added a nice turbo ( everything else stock ) and ran 12.6@111mph. Forced induction FTW!

I'd say PR is close enough to sea level that any correction factor is negligible.

Using the oldest available readings from Carolina PR this is what I came up with:

At 1pm yesterday:

Altitude is 13ft
Air Temp was 82.9 degrees f
Barometric Pressure was 30.07
Dew Point was 69.1

Your Density Altitude is 1686 feet...

Meaning, the conditions were similar to those at 1686 feet. Not that big of a difference from seal level BTW.

I know its hard to accept (especially for some out here) – but launch off idle *for now*

Brake torque cuts power… I’ve been saying it forever, its finally been proven. I used Cipher at last track event and data-logged particulars that Up-Rev requested to diagnose issue… after sending the spreadsheet to them, they confirmed that the throttle is cut for a moment when the ECU recognizes the accelerator and brake are depressed at same time.

I’ve dealt with this for a looonnng time and determined 2-3 years ago that my 60; is actually better when launching off idle (even at 650-700rmp) than power-braking to 2-2.5K

The reason I said *for now* in first sentence is that Up-Rev is working on a solution… that was the whole reason I asked them to look at this issue… so we (AT) might be in business in the near future!

Edit: BTW - our stall speed is about 2500 and the trq converter isn’t that bad in these cars... I contemplated having trq converter re-built - but I'm waiting to see what Up-Rev comes up with the address the mention above. I think once the power cut issue is fixed, I can cut 60' times by .1 at least by launching around 2K even with stock trq converter.
