So I ran 87 octane once, never again.

Boy I decided to try it. I have been running 93 octane since I got the car, 10k ago. And now tried 87 octane. I am sorry but the car was running so bad it was trying to die on me when I took off!!!! It was coughing, and was extremly weak feeling. Felt weaker than my 1.8t in my Audi I use to have!

The 6MT needs 93 octane guys. Do not run no less.

I picked up some STP JetFuel Octane Booster, and put it in my tank with 3/4 left, and it helped alot to keep teh car running better. As soon as a 1/4 tank hit, 93 octane she got and she is ALIVE AGAIN! Now I can scratch all the way up to 3rd gear again without a problem!

Just a word of friendly advice, stay away from lower than 93.

Re: So I ran 87 octane once, never again.

I can't speak for the MT version, but I have been running for 17K miles now (except 2 tanks so I could know whether there was any difference) and my automatic sedan has never had any hesitation or lack of willingness to run, and I don't believe there is any adverse effect on mileage.

I respect g35_TX's experience as I have a 2001 Z06 Corvette that doesn't like to run on 91 octane premium, even though the General says that is fine. It will ping audibly on 91 octane premium, but I have NEVER hear this from my G35. Feed the vette 93 octane, and it is happy.

I just haven't had the same experience as G35_TX with my G35 sedan.

Re: So I ran 87 octane once, never again.

I don't doubt G35_TX's experience, however. A couple of things may have contributed to his observation. 1. The summer heat. 2. Little or no time for the ECU to adapt (switch map).

Our ECU contains 3 maps, of which the base map will accomodate 87-octane gas without any hitches. The two higher maps have slightly more aggressive settings to better take advantage of higher octane fuel.

Of the 26,000+ miles on my car, 95% of which are on 87-octane pump gas and never a problem. The only time I run 91 is for track events and most recently for a dyno run.

It may take the ECU some time before it decides the current map is too aggresive. A sure way to revert back to the default (lowest) map promptly is to perform an ECU reset via battery disconnect. Likewise, if you decide to go from 87 to 91 ... you should also do a reset. The ECU starts from the base map and if the conditions are favorable after x amount of time will then advance to the next map (or step down in map if the unfavorable conditions are met). What's not clear at this point is exactly how long this interval is. No one knows the exact algorithm at work other than the Nissan Engineers.

Well, I had a loaner and put 87 octane in it. It was a 5AT and I noticed no difference really, so thats why I decided to try it on my 6MT. Wrong!! The 6MT has different programming in the ECU, probably more agreesive and requires 91+.

Don't tell me you did it because you were trying to save money...

...I think the loaner didn't react the same just because it's probably been running 87 for a long time... I mean... who fills up a loaner with premium? Not me, that's for sure

Hell I even think the dealer filled up my car with 87 before I went on a test drive :|

Re: So I ran 87 octane once, never again.

Sorry, G35_TX, but the best I can get locally is 91 Octane, here in Northern California. Have never tried anything less, but would like to try your 93 octane fuel in my 6MT.

Thanks for the info.

Well the amount of times I fill up I was seeing if I could run on it out of curiosity. 100 miles a day you know is about 3-4 days on fill up. hehe.

91 octane is fine per the manual. But 93 is the highest here and 87 and 89 are the lower ones. I love texas for 93 octane.

dbarnes,

If you're anywhere near Sonoma. Try Infineon Raceway, they have gas station right at the entrance. 4.54/gallon 100 octane.
I treated my G recently to a half of tank, felt noticeable diffrence. Tach would hit redline with no hesitation whatsoever.

I ran 87 ever since I bought the car, no problems whatsoever.

I think it was Ryoken that has been running 87 octane routinely with no problems.

I'm not even going to try putting in any lower octane fuels. Kind of like drinking cheap wine at a fancy restraunt.

Re: So I ran 87 octane once, never again.

MOTOP,

Thanks for the heads up on that 100 Octane! - I live in the East Bay, about 60 miles due east of The City, so I get up that way once or twice a year (outside of Infineon events - which I'd never take my "G" to and leave in those parking conditions, anyway). I'd like to try a tankfull of 100 octane.

As a sidelight, I'm thinking of going to one of the Jim Russell Racing courses at Infineon (I've been before), the one where they show you how to drive whatever car you own as fast, as safely, and as well as you possibly can. It's kind of funny to see everything from minivans to Vipers on the same track (spaced safely apart, of course), all with tires howling from full-on hard maximum driving. Anyway, after the "G" gets about 10,000-15,000 miles on her, I'd like to have a pro show me what she can do, and how I can do better as well. You should see what a minivan can do in the hands of a Formula car driver !

Thanks again for the 411 on the 100 Octane!
