hey.. i know that this topic has been killed.. but last night i just filled up and i calculated that i got on this last tank 13.5 mpg.. i have about 3000 miles on the car.. so its past break in period.. most of the driving have been city.. sure i drive WOT every now and then.. but generally im pretty conservative.. is 13.5 normal? is there something wrong with my sedan? thanks for the help.. and.. anybody see less mileage than this? how often?

Re: another mileage thread
It seems WOT really increases gas consumption. I'm averaging 17-20 in a mostly city mix of driving. Auto transmission, G35X. You seem to be getting worse mileage than most. Are there other indications that your driving might be responsible for the low mileage? Do your passengers turn white when you accelerate? Are you able to wipe that grin off your face?
Seriously, I think my mileage improved after 5 or 6 thousand miles. Yours may too.

You're right, the topic of gas mileage has been "killed", but then again, it's a "killer" subject for most of us - the cost of gas vs. driving enjoyment vs. compromising on what we drive.
I just turned 6,000 miles, and I'm happy to report that my "G" is getting steadily better in the mileage department, AND it is getting stronger and more responsive every day. Maybe we aren't going WOT as much, either, as we begin to "choose our moments" more judiciously, as well.
Give it some more time, but keep documenting your mileage for future warrranty issues, in case it doesn't improve and you have a faulty engine.
My humble opinion.

Re: another mileage thread
Are you using oxygenated or conventional gasoline expect at least a 1 mpg decline from oxygenated.
At WOT the engine consumes 0.35 gallons per minute at 6,000 rpm campared to [2.3 gallons per hour or 0.03846 gallons per minute at 60 mph cruise............about 9 times as much in WOT acceleration per minute.

Re: another mileage thread
My car [6MT sedan] is still new [under 1000 miles] but I have bought gas for it twice now. I'm doing a mix of city and highway, and I'm staying under 4000 RPM's per the break-in procedure. For both tanks I got right around 22 mpg. Perhaps it is just your driving style. You could try experimenting for a gas tank and ease up a bit to see if you get more mpg's...
Re: another mileage thread
hmm.. thanks for all the helpful replies.. what makes it worse is that i dont even drive wih passengers.. my car is completely empty.. so i expected mileage to be much better. and wow jstwong.. thats incredible mileage.. even during that break in period i was averaging around 16 or 17.. maybe im just too crazy of a driver.. also you have a manual that might be it.. but im just relaly worried.. i havent heard anyone get below 13.5.. its just so ugly.. to pull only 240 miles on a 45 dollar tank is soo depressing!

Re: another mileage thread
The best way to improve mileage is to change your driving habits. For one tank, try to keep the rpm's low and speed under 60 mph. Keep the speed steady rather than speeding up and slowing down often. Keep the windows rolled up and the AC off. This will give you an idea of your maximum mpg.
Also, short trips are much worse on mileage than longer trips. If you only drive 5 miles to work, there's not much you can do as it takes time for your car to be working at full efficiency.

Get an rpm sensor that engages a deafening buzzer or electric shock every time you exceed 2,700 rpm [still let you cruise at 70 mph] and have power available for emergency.
Your mpg will improve to oem specs maybe better.
By the way EPA highway test average 48 mph and under no conditions allow more than 60.5 mph.........no passing allowed.
Rural city mph test are even more severe 11 miles is covered in 31 minutes with an average of 20 mph. 23 stops and 5 minutes of idling. AC is not allowed and the test are done in moderate temperatures no rain.
AC alone will reduce MPG by up to 20%.

Re: another mileage thread
My 04 G35x has about 4000 miles on it. I had been getting around 19-20 MPG.
Last weekend took a road trip. 1600 miles, all interstate, windows up and AC on, cruise set on 79.5 the whole way. I got 24.08 MPG.
Keep the RPM's below 3000. Set an apple on the dash, if it falls off you pulling away from lights too fast or breaking too hard.
That is, if you are really worried about the MPG's. Otherwise, drove it like ya stolt it.

Re: another mileage thread
Interesting info on how the EPA mileage testing is done. Thanks for letting us know. Personally, I'm not an overly aggressive driver to begin with, nor do I use the A/C much [I like to feel the wind
] so that helps with my MPG. Do you have wider aftermarket wheels? Or soft tires? Wider and softer than OEM will also hurt your MPG [though I wouldn't think as drastically as you are experiencing].
You may want to also make sure that your tires are properly inflated. I keep my cold temp. pressure at 32 psi, which is a little bit higher than factory recommendation - but works well for me. I'm running the stock 17x7.0 wheels now, with the Goodyear GS-D's. I do have on order though a set of 18x8.5, with Pirelli PZero Nero's, so I am interested to see how that effects my MPG.

Re: another mileage thread
Q45tech, I have always found that the AC decreases gas mileage in every other car but my G35 sedan. In the winter with no AC I am getting 2-3 mpg less than in the summer. Some have blamed winter gas, but I get the same mpg in my '94Taurus year round. Wonder what is up with that?
To the original poster, I am getting 21-23 mpg depending on how much foot I stick into it. I usually gun it from a stoplight at least 4 times each time I drive her, but reign it in close to the speed limit. I rarely drive more than 5-9 mph over the speedlimit.. I am not trying to be rude, but are you careful with your calculations? Are you doing a LOT of WOT driving? Is it a BIG city with terrible traffic and lots of looooooong stoplights? Just curious - hope things improve for you soon.

Re: another mileage thread
With about 1600 miles on my new 2004 6MT, I have yet to see LESS than 20 MPG in mixed driving. I've been very pleasantly surprised by the fuel mileage so far. Right now I've got about 3/8 of a tank showing on the gauge after about 320 miles of mostly highway driving; based on my experience so far that will work out to something close to 25 MPG.
I don't baby the car, but I don't constantly run it to redline either. There just aren't that many opportunities in my normal daily commute to run it that hard. Also, I've gotten into the habit of running in 6th gear at anything over about 35MPH. The car's got more than enough torque to cruise comfortably at barely over 1,000 RPM, and I'm sure that's a big contributor to my mileage figure so far.
