Gas Mileage
Re: Gas Mileage
Here in Southern Calif. commuting from El Cajon to Coronado I am getting 17 to 19mpg which is fine. But the "feed me light" lights up and I can only put 16 gallons in.
I have to sssstrreeeeetch the driving with the needle past E for 75 miles it seems like to get the tank to take 18 or 19 gallons. Which leads to the all too common "Oh I can go 100 miles on empty, easy......". You're sure?
Question: Anybody got any figures on mileage on long trips at higher average speeds (legal of course) like 74mph (9mph over legal)?
Thanks

I don't know how to link directly to it, but search on this sedan forum for my post last updated 6/11/04 entitled "High Speed Cruise/Mileage", where 11 other people also weighed in on their thoughts/experiences regarding same.
I went from SF Bay Area to Boise, Idaho end of May, 2004. Car had 3,500 miles on it when I started (1st oil change just before I left). 640 miles each way, took 9 Hrs 15 Min on way up (average speed 69.19 MPH), took 8 Hrs 20 Min on way back (average speed 76.8 MPH) - the times include the 20-25 minute gas/restroom stop in Winnemucca, Nevada each way.
Had 3 adults and a trunk PACKED with luggage, used 1/4 quart of conventional 5/30 Wt oil, and the run included a lot of open road mountain driving (Sierras), stormy weather, and battling high crosswinds 15-20% of the time. Ran 80+ MPH on every open highway situation, 92 MPH (electronic limit of our cruise control) quite often and for long stretches when possible, and hit 137 MPH for one stretch on Interstate 5, for about 60 seconds. I am a fast, but safe driver.
End Result: 1308 Miles travelled total (including some "around town" driving in Boise), and 56.5 gallons of premium used = 23.1 MPG overall average.
I think someone posted on that thread about a run with even higher average speeds, too (wonder if they actually figured in the gas breaks, though).
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the site search suggestions and the detailed trip account. That's an amazing average speed since it includes gas stops.
I will try to look for similar posts on "longest range on one tank". I've haven't got 400 miles yet under any conditions,
but I really really really like trying. What a car!

I drive on long trips at night whenever possible - like to leave at 11:00-12:00 midnight, drive 10 - 12 hours +/-, then crash at a motel/hotel. Hardly any traffic, and the cops don't seem to care as much (IMHO) - I drove to Dallas, Texas in December and only had the radar detector go off 3 times in 3,600+ miles round trip - again always driving at night, on the Interstates, mostly 85 MPH steady on cruise control. Didn't have the "G" yet, but averaged 28 MPG in my '96 Accord EX 5 Spd, including one stretch across New Mexico at 3:00 Am running 105 MPH for 1 Hour 10 minutes (then my "blocker" with NM plates running about 1/4 mile ahead pulled off, so I had to slow back down).
Love 'em or hate 'em, I'm a lifetime Bay Area resident and season ticket holder (also PSL) with my Raiders!
Happy Driving !

Re: Gas Mileage
With 1,700 mi. on my car now, I just returned from Orlando (from S. Florida) and averaged 22.9 mpg (all highway) on the way up and 20.9 (mostly highway with some city driving around Orlando) on the way back. I'm hoping what many here say holds true...mpg should increase after 5k mi., but it's not the highway mpg that stinks, just the city mpg...around town, I'm still averaging about 15 or so.

Re: Gas Mileage
Well, that's not bad, the EPA is just 18, I have been getting between 18-19 mostly city driving, no complaints about that!

Re: Gas Mileage
I just drove the wife and kids from the Bay Area to Disneyland. 75MPH+ the whole way. A/C on the entire time, 3 kids + wife, trunk full o'luggage. 23.5 MPG. No gas stops. Had around 360miles on odometer and Gas light wasn't on yet.
Re: Gas Mileage
Someone on this thread recently mentioned that they've been getting decent mileage in MM mode (5AT) by upshifting into the next gear around 2k-2.5k rpm, and trying to drive around in 5th gear at 40+ mph. Although I thought this wasn't as easy as it sounds, I modified my driving a bit, and I've been trying to upshift at 2.5k rpm (instead of 3k-3.5k) for each gear and also get into 5th gear as much as possible.
I guess this, along with slightly less aggressive driving (with an occassional WOT of course...gotta have some fun ;-) has now got me 17-18 mpg in the city instead of my typically poor 14-15 mpg. My total highway mpg has been steady at 22-23 mpg. I now have 1700 miles on my car, and it will be interesting to see if my mpg increases after 5k miles as others have said.

Re: Gas Mileage
If I fill up, get right on the hiway and use cruise control set to 65 I get between 28.5 and 31 mpg on my 6MT with 13K miles on it. Around center city Philly with stop lights every block I get 1 gallon per mph. If my average speed is 11 on my nav system, I get about 11 mpg, 12-12, 13-13, 14-14. It hurts to drive that slow, but that's what it's like where I live. Average cty/hwy about 17
Re: Gas Mileage
28.5-31mpg...That's damn good highway mpg!! Not sure what the 6MT is rated for, but the 5AT is rated for 17mpg city / 23mpg highway...nowhere near 31mpg. Now that I've been shifting into 5th more often and upshifting in MM mode at around 2k-2.5k rpm, my city mpg has improved to 16-17mpg, and I'm getting 19-20mpg for a mix of city/highway now.

Re: Gas Mileage
Ran the car to empty after a complete fill up - 346.2 miles - equates to about 22 mpg mixed driving from a constant 65-70mph average to a few 100mph bursts. After what I thought was a completely empty tank (light was on for about 10 miles) the car took 15.76 gallons? Has anyone come close to putting 20 gallons in the tank? BTW: this was 98.5% highway mileage.

Re: Gas Mileage
I haven't put 20 gal in yet, but I did recently look at my G35's sticker and was shocked to see the 18 mpg city / 26 mpg highway rating...what? Ok...I could see 18 mpg in the city (I'm now averaging about 17 mpg in the city), but so far, after 2 all highway trips, I got 23 mpg. I have another all highway trip next week, so I'll see if it's improved, but I bet I still get around 23 or so. Hopefully other people are right and the gas mileage improves after 5k miles; I have about 1800 mi. on my car now.

Re: Gas Mileage
My Sedan would get 26 MPG (U.S. Gallon) on the highway no problem, but to do it I had to keep to the speed limit (here it's 60 MPH).
My Coupe is a little more thirsty.. it can get about 25 on the hwy.
I've found with both G's that warmups, cool/cold weather, and city driving really kill the mileage.(more so than other rides I've had)... Seems to be the nature of the beast.
