One thing to look for is whether blue smoke is coming out of your exhaust. It's a telltale sign that oil is leaking into the chamber (an issue following this experience if you damaged the rings or engine wall). Also, if you "fried" anything but the car still runs fairly well, you can sometimes see tiny metal shavings at your next oil change.

 

my G35 sedan did this before I got rid of it. I came to a stop light really hard and the oil light went on. when I checked the oil it was 4 qts low. I ran to the Lexus dealership 2 weeks later.
