Does anybody know the actual numbers for the sale of 6MT sedans vs. 5AT sedans?

Being an "enthusiasts" website, there are a LOT of 6 MTs on this forum (almost as many as 5ATs, I understand), as compared to how few there are on the streets I'm told, but I haven't heard the actual numbers. Anybody know?

Normally, it's about 10% manuals for most cars. I'm not sure how many G's - would have thought more, but it's next to impossible to find a used 6MT, so I'm guessing not a lot.

You see a lot of 6MTs here, but these boards are loaded with gearheads and car fanatics, so they probably aren't representative of the rest of the population.

I think 4th gen Maxima's were 5% and I swear I see more 5spds of those then G35 sedans.

To this date I have only seen like 2 6mt's besides mine.

When I was shopping for my 6MT sedan, I asked what the percentage was. Two different dealers stated that it was about 5% [sedans only - not counting coupes].

 

I just checked the four Infiniti dealers in Houston. They have a total of 166 AT Sedans and TWO 6 MT Sedans for sale. I find this amazing considering the number of 6MT owners on this board. Maybe its the Houston traffic? Dunno.

Although this board is loaded with 6MT sedans, I keep hearing how they are "rare", and I haven't seen many myself out in the parking lots and on the highways - so I'm curious to know the real poduction numbers, and also to see whether the sales "fell off" after the initial rush of MT buyers were satisfied after the long delay in getting an MT in this car.

Actual production numbers, or a link to wher I can find them, would be appreciated. Anybody ??

When I bought my 2004 6MT sedan last September, my understanding was that 10% were MT's.

Even worse, I was watching Speed Channel (Auto Week) today and they had the G35x review. They said that Infiniti would not offer a 6MT "x" because there wasn't enough interest; it was also due to lack of interest that they would not offer an "x" coupe. I find that hard to believe, but this forum probably isn't representative of the buying public. Who knows??

 

How do you tell if the car is a MT? Look inside? Or look at how it takes off from a stop?

In other words, if I were to take my auto in to enough service where I could claim a loaner, the chances are I wouldn't be able to get the MT as the loaner?

Of course, with how my wrist has been feeling the last 4 days, if I had purchased one, I would be driving my truck now

I learned how to drive on a manual (3 speed on column , but I felt a MT was impractical for me for everyday city driving.

But I wouldn't mind driving one again for a few days.

First thing I look for is the 5 spoke mags (which means Sport Suspension, which ALL 6MTs have, but can also be ordered on 5AT's), then the leather interior (again, all 6MTs have Leather and Sport Packages standard). If it has those two options, then it's a "suspect". I find myself subconsciously checking out EVERY G35 Sedan for these indicators.

Then , if it's parked, I meander on over and take a glance inside. If it's on the road, then yes, I look for signs of 6MT (slight surges when taking off and changing gears, also can hear the gear whine in 1st gear if deccelerating or in slow stop and go traffic) - can usually tell for sure if a "rolling" car IS a 6MT, but can't always tell if it's NOT (in other words, some drivers and/or situations are smooth enough that I just can't tell while rolling - those I can only wonder about. With others, the 6MT is obvious). Sometimes, when they know I'm checking them out, they'll leave the stoplight/stopsign in such a way, or rev first and grab rubber into 2nd, which of course, confirms the 6MT for me.

My experience has been only about 1 in 8 with Sport Suspension and Leather are actually 6MTs, upon looking inside.

I guess other ways to eliminate candidates is to tell if it is a 2003. I believe 6MT started with the 2003.5.

I just looked, and my auto (non sports) does have the 6 spokes.

I didn't go with the sports suspension because I wanted as smooth of ride as possible. The handling was more than adequate from where I was coming from.

a couple years back, BMW was producing 40% MT in the 3 series, so maybe it's more than the 5% I read on the 2000 Maxima (5th gen) and the what you folks are speculating on the G35.

I haven't seen anything published, and I'm always skeptical of what the dealer tells me (at time of purchase: "oh, the MT6 is very rare, you have to pay more"....then, at the time of trade: "no-one wants a stick, you get lousy trade value"....)

My dealer in BHM typically only has one or two MT, loads of AT. Traffic here is crummy, but nowhere as bad as the big cities

Isn't Houston traffic miserable? that might explain the high ratio of AT to MT

 

as near as i've been able to tell it's about 1-2 percent. grubbs infiniti dealer rep on FA says 1 percent. when i bought mine there were 31 G35 sedans on the lot and mine was the only 6MT. My salesman owned one that he bought from the dealer and he told me it was the only other one he had seen there.

so i tend to think that the 6MT is pretty rare and probably mostly built to order.
