Misaligned Trunk!

I need your help! My auto body tech just told me that my trunk is misaligned and it is digging into my bumper chipping the paint away on one side. Of course I never noticed this for the one year I have had this car, I just thought it was a scratch from dragging stuff into my trunk. But it's NOT! My truck is off by close to one quarters cm on the left side. I definitely have not tampered with it, and it looks like it rolled off the assembly line like that... quite a disappointment... so my question is.. how do I pursue this? Should I call my dealership and ask that they realign it and repaint my bumper? Or should I call Infiniti? Ahh.... I am scared they are going to give me the run-around...

Re: Misaligned Truck!

Not understanding what area is misaligned???
The way the bumper skins attach the holes have to line up for the pop clips to be inserted & there are bolts which pull it in place from inside the trunk.
What area are you talking about specificaly?
Do you have a pic?

Re: Misaligned Truck!

okay, maybe i wasnt too accurate in my description, but please view this photo, one side of the trunk is sunken in like the enclosed phote while the other side is even and leveled.. the sunken side is cutting into my bumper everytime i slam the trunk and is causing a long scratch. I think inifiniti needs to realign the trunk so it comes out a little more so it stops cutting into the bumper. is that understandable? need more pics?

Re: Misaligned Truck!

Here's a picture of the misaligned trunk. It's kindda hard to see on the photo, but if you look at it carefully you can see the gap between the trunk and the bumper on the left side is closer to the bumper than the right side. So everytime when I close my trunk the trunk hits the bumper causing a minor scratch mark around 7-8 inches long.

Re: Misaligned Truck!

The trunk itself doesn't look out of alignment (based on your pic)

It may be that the bumper is not properly attached. In the yellow areas there are clips that the bumper skin slides into.
When installed, they may have missed getting it into the slot of the clip. OR the bracket that holds the clip needs to move down a bit. It shouldn't be too dificult to do. I can give more detailed info if you need it. (I have removed & reinstaled my own before)

Re: Misaligned Trunk!

I would first go straight to the dealer! Who cares about the run around! For what you paid and it still being under warranty, the customer is always right and if you tell them you didn't mess with and they don't believe you, go higher and talk to the service manager, owner, whoever and get them to fix it! It's not worth not going to them. If they respect themselves, they'll fix it, repaint your bumper and realign your trunk! Botton line, don't take no for an answer!!!

Re: Misaligned Truck!

You're not telling us the whole story here. By the looks of the bottom photo in the middle and at the very bottom, it looks like your bumper has performed it's function and taken a bump.

Why was the auto body tech looking at your car?

I was rear-ended and after the work my trunk is not quite aligned left to right. There's really no adjustment for it so if yours is off it's because something else is awry. If you were hit and didn't know it, try opening the trunk and lifting the carpet, inspect the inside of the trunk at the very rear of the car. Use your knee to push the bumper plastic in, to test how solid it is. Do it on the left, right, and in the middle. Does the bumper cover go in more in the middle of the bumper?

I think your car has been hit.

Re: Misaligned Truck!

doogie

I thought that at first too. & you might be right.
But it may just be the refection of the photog in the bumper.

I was looking at the rub mark in the other pic, & I know that its right where a mounting clip is. Kind of looks like it's on top of the clip instead of in it.

Hard to tell conclusively from a pic. I agree, there should be other evidence if the car has been hit.

If not the result of a hit I would definitely see my dealer.

Re: Misaligned Trunk!

All... he's probably right!

I pointed this out to a couple of folks at HID last sat on my sedan.

I have a NISMO kit installed by either the factory or the dealer. the left hand corner of the trunk bangs into my bumper and there is about a 1/2" rise from the left to the right.

My car is at Riverside Infiniti right now having the B pillar rattle, rear trunk handle and moonroof shade fixed.

I might call and ask them to check this out while they are at it.

Cheers, Ted

Re: Misaligned Trunk!

I just called the dealer and asked them to check it out. I am thinking, that perhaps its because we reach inside tothe trunk and "yank" it down from one side when closing. It has become increasingly noticeable, so i would say that this would be a good explanation!

Cheers, Ted
