CEL secondary to test pipes, & the mechanical fix

Made about 100 miles with testpipes on and the G throws an emission based code. This sucks because my Z never did it with gutted cats. Anyway, going back to Subie days, they came up with a mechanical fix. Basically, you use two stacked 18mm spark plug non-foulers to take the sensor out of the direct emission stream so it will not throw an ULEV inspired code. You must drill the non-fouler with the sensor screwed into it with a 1/2" bit. Reset ECU and all is well after another 100 smiles.

Here's the parts I used. Not bad for $14.

So wait, exactly what does this all mean. The dealer will find out if we put test pipe's on? Is this to pass emissions? Will the car run the same after 100 miles? Sorry but am a bit confused. Thanks, Martin

Re: CEL secondary to test pipes, & the mechanical fix

The dealer will see an emmission code. My modded G threw a CEL after 100 miles with the test pipes on. Apparently, the '04 G has more advanced ULEV software in the ECU. This fix backs the sensor out of the dirty emission flow so it still senses cats heating, but only detects a portion of the dirty emission fooling your ECM into thinking all is clean. Test pipes will never pass emissions. This fix is only to keep the "service engine soon" light from burning a hole in the dash.

Oh hmmm, I had no idea about this problem and im putting the test pipe's on hopefully tomorrow if this guy comes through lol and ill be dyno'ing tomorrow. So do I have to do this? He is a branch of nissan and its a performance nissan shiop, do you think he'll know about this? And also after 100 miles it throws a code into your ecu, how do you get rid of it, simple ecu reset? And why cant u just reset it every 100 miles, would get annoying rite? Thanks, Martin

The ECU reset the CEL in the dash. The fix takes it away. I am not sure if '03s have the same emmission program as the '04s. My '03 Z didn't throw a CEL with gutted cats. The gains are well worth it for a $14 fix.

But, what happens if lets say it throws an emissions code? What do I do since its a leased car? Does it go away with the fix and an ecu reset or does the dealer have to do something? Thanks again..

Re: CEL secondary to test pipes, & the mechanical fix

Basically, at end of lease, the car should appear as close to off the showroom floor as possible. Having a mod friendly dealer may help, but getting the required service done at any ASE approved service station is all one needs to keep the warranty intact. In worst case scenario the car is turned in with an emission code locked in to the memory without a physical explanation. Any dealer would erase the codes and test the cat efficiency with their tool. If everything passes, they do nothing. If you do the $14 mechanical fix at the same time you install the test pipes, you won't have any emission code at all in the memory of your ECU.

I got a couple of questions for ya. the spark plug foulers, can you get them at any auto parts store or is it a special item. are they threaded the same as the O2 sensor or do yo need to re-tap. one last one, what do you mean be drilling a 1/2" hole with the sensor installed, do you have a pic of where the hole needs to be drilled?

thanks...the dang SEL light is driving me nuts as it's a pain in the *** to clear every other day.

Found a nice forum thread on the steps taken with pics:
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1841240

o2 Sensor inserted in the modified non fouler

Second, unmodified non fouler now installed on modified non fouler, then threaded into the downpipe.

I'm buying test pipes tomorrow. This is definitely worth the research before installing. I'd keep them on for the summer for sound and track, but during the winter and emissions...OEM cats going back on.
