What to do with old exhaust?

I really want to put an exhaust on my car and have almost purchased one 3 times. My largest concern right now is what to do with my stock exhaust. I want to keep it so I can go to stock afterwards, but I don't ahve the room for it. I have a 1 car garage and a 1200ft apartment; I can't find space for such an obtrusive exhaust.

I suppose I could sell it and then purchase one when I need it but that's a hassle on both ends.

What are most of you doing with your stock exhausts?

Also, how big is the exhaust box for the new one when you purchase it. Could you throw it in your trunk and let it hang out, or did you have to get someone with a truck to drive it around? Same goes for, how did you get your stock exhaust back home (pending you have an exhaust shop install it). I will probably install it myself, but may pay someone to do it since my leg is injured.

Attach a bowl on it and use it as a hauka pipe!

I bought the Stillen. That one breaks down so that it will all fit in your trunk. As for the stock exhaust, it will fit in your trunk with one of the pieces sticking out of the center rear armest tunnel. You won't want to keep it there though. I guess you'll either have to sell your old on, throw it away, or find some creative storage solution for it.

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

Knowing that it all fits in my car is a bonus, that alleviates one concern.

I guess I can leave it in my garage for a couple of weeks and attempt to sell it. Hopefully there will always be someone selling a used one if I need it. How many pieces does the stock system break down into?

The oem breaks up into 3 pieces:
Y-pipe, Mid-pipe, and Muffler section.

btw ... where are you located?

BrianV:

Get some hooks and hang it from the garage ceiling - shouldn't intrude more than 8-10 inches into your overhead clearance.

Let us know what happens - good luck.

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

I'm in Austin, TX

About the hanging from the ceiling? I have drywall and limited room on any side of the opener. Finding a stud in optimal place may be a concern. Plus I will probably be moving soon and the hassle of that would be another issue. Not to mention, hanging a 100+ LB exhaust over my car via hooks isn't too comforting, even if I get the hooks deep into the studs.

Clever idea though.

Get family or friends to store it for you until you move.

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

If you don't have room to store it, it doesn't sound like it's worth keeping. Put it this way, why do you want to keep the stock exhaust? Are you concerned that you're not going to like the replacement? If you don't like the replacement, what are you going to do with it?

Most (if not all) replacement exhaust systems I've seen come with a lifetime guarantee. That's comforting.

You've got your own reasons but if I were you, I'd leave it behind at the shop.

BrainV- Lol, if you're not into pipes , there's not much you can do with it except find a friend or family member to store it for you.

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

I suppose I'll just try and sell it on ebay. Even if I only get $50, that's $50 saved. Hopefully when I need an exhaust again I can purchase one for a similar amount. I don't plan on modding my car to the extreme so I'd probably assume put it back to stock before I sell it.

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

It is a lease, but that doesn't matter, in January I'm going to finance it on my own out of the lease. The car is holding its value too well for me to continue leasing it.

Regardless I'd rather sell it stock, it's easier to sell stock cars, and you don't get any 'extra' money for mods typically.

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

BrianV:

You could also hang the exhaust from the wall of the garage, as close to the ceiling as you can fit it. That way, you can easily find the studs for the hangers, and don't need to worry about it falling down onto your car from above. Those hooks they use for hanging bicycles work well (I've got 2 systems hanging from mine now - for whenever I need to go "back to stock") - just another option for 'ya.

Happy Trails ....

Re: What to do with old exhaust?

Unfortunately one side of my garage is racks for stuff and the other side has a bunch of bicycle hangers for my row boats.
