tire pressure monitor problem?
tire pressure monitor problem?
so yesterday and today i was driving on the highway and my tire pressure monitor light came on at highway speeds. my tires have more than enough pressure. i turned the car off and back on and it does go away. my car was recently lowered. any ideas? a computer glitch possibly? anyone else have similiar problems. could the lowered have cause this. it was only an inch drop. thanks for any comments

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
Do you have aftermarket wheels? I rececnly put 18s on my car and when im on the highway longer than 30 minutes my tire pressure monitor light comes on too. i have a digital tire guage and my tire pressure is never low. i think it must be a glitch in the ECU

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
Same problem...it happens to my car after 45 min. of continuous highway driving, and my Infiniti service dept. cannot figure out what's causing the problem. They've "reset" all 4 of my tire pressure sensors 2x and said if the light comes on again (which I'm sure it will as soon as I get on the highway for 45 min.), they'll order a new tire pressure monitor "control unit" (I think it's separate from the ECU though).
If it is the ECU, then I suggest doing what many G35 drivers will be doing in a few months; that is to wait until the '05's come out so they can reflash the ECU and TCU with the updated '05 software...that way, any "glitches" (possibly including this tire pressure monitor issue, the 5AT MM upshift delay, and it not shifting into the selected gear) could be solved with the new updated software (and you might even get a little more HP to boot).
My Infiniti service advisor calls the problem "the tire pressure monitor 'crying wolf;' I call it 'a safety issue.' I can't understand why Infiniti does not have a TSB on this yet?????

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
bsgoren, is your tire pressure monitor issue with the stock wheels, or have you changed them out to aftermarket [your picture seems to show stock]?
I just got my 18" Volk wheels mounted on my 6MT sedan today, and so far no issues with the tire pressure monitor - though I was not driving it for the lengths of times mentioned above. I'll definately keep my eye out for this potential issue.

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
I have the stock 17" Infiniti sport wheels. I've had the tire pressure monitor light come on 3 times after 3 long trips (all after driving on the highway for 45 min. and the light stays on for the entire rest of the trip and goes off after I shut off the car), and my Infiniti service dept. has "reset" all 4 tire pressure sensors 2x; I will be taking another long business trip tomorrow, and will be calling my Infiniti servcie advisor if and when the light comes on again (which I'm fairly certain it will).

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
i have stock wheels however the car has been lowered an inch. mine seems to come in only about 15 minutes on highway driving. also it was raining both times, i'll have to see if it does it on a dry day. the shop foreman at my local dealer is a friend of mine, i'll ask if he's heard of others having this problem.

No, no audible alarm; just the light comes on, but since it's untrustworthy, I wouldn't know if there really is a problem with one or more of my tires...this is a safety feature and it's failed, so now it's a safety issue. They better fix it. Either way, I'm probably going to get the '05 ECU and TCU reflashes (when they come out) so maybe my MM issues will be resolved as well.
btw - jgordonwin, my car is not lowered, and your car being lowered shouldn't matter either...I bet you have the exact same problem I do...it's faulty.

Bsgoren:
You list your car as a 2004.5 model - what is the build date ? Just curious - don't know where the "cutoffs" are on the models years.

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
Mine has never come on. And I have done alot of long trips. Hmm. But it did come on when I lowered the PSI down on the rears for the track. So I know it works.

Hmm mine has a alarm when it comes on. It sounds for like 10-20 seconds then goes away.

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
My car has a March, '04 build date, and I've never heard any audible alarm go off (but then again, I like to listen to my music fairly loud -- usually 16-22 on the volume, so maybe I just never heard it sound but I sure see the light turn on after 45 min. on the highway).
I usually keep all my tires at about 33-34 psi (cold) and I've stopped to check the tires when the light comes on and all 4 are ok (and actually b/c they're so hot, they're up to 38-40 psi). There's definitely a problem that Infiniti can't figure out ;-( Maybe a nice '05 TCU (& ECU for the MM tranny issues) would cure this problem as well, although they said to call them tomorrow if it comes on again so they can order me a new 'tire pressure monitor control unit.'

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
I had it happen 2 or 3 times back in May on my 2004.
One time when I checked the pressure, it was at 29 on one of the tires. And since the tires are supposed to be at 30, I added air.
But it isn't supposed to trigger until it gets down to 25.
It did it again, but it hasn't happened since I raised it to 31.
So, unless my gauge is way off (and it actually reads lower than another I've compared it against), I figure it was a pot hole, or something, that triggered the monitor.
And it took a few days before the light went out.

Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
My 2004 coupe does the same thing with the TPS. Except I haven't lowered my car at all. My 2004 sedan is fine. For me, it's not necessarily 45 mins of driving but at random times. I looked around for the TSBs in the TSB forum and it does list it but more on the m45 and q45. It does have something to do with the ECU. I took it to the dealer and they said they have never heard of the problem!!!! I think they are just lazy or something.
Re: tire pressure monitor problem?
I had heard that there was an audible alarm when the tire pressure sensor goes off, but I just wanted to confirm it. So far, no TPS issues for me and my new Volks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way! I too have a 2004.5 [build date of April, 2004]. I don't know the VIN # cut offs, but there is another post floating around here that does lists the VIN #.
