Re: Manual Mode Question

In manumatic, the G tranny really hates to downshift to second from 3rd slowing down. It just goes from 3 to 1. I noticed all Gs have this jolt when downshifting from 3 to 2. Just let the computer do it for you.

Re: Manual Mode Question

I usually let the computer downshift from 3rd to 1st in MM mode, but occassionally I'll downshift from 3rd to 2nd and I sometimes feel that hard buck into 2nd. However, I figured out that if I let my foot off the gas and let it coast a bit (doing about 15-20 mph), it doesn't 'buck' hard into 2nd gear; it just downshifts smoothly. But, like I said, most of the time, it's easier to just let the computer downshift from 3rd to 1st.

Re: Manual Mode Question

My early 2004 only displays the maximum speed in MM mode. Essentially it is a D5, D4, D3, etc, in a more compact mode than a traditional automatic.

And better than some cars, like my rental on a recent trip that had 1, 3, and 4, since there were a few times in the mountains a 2 would have been useful.

Not sure when the cut-off date was, but my '04.5 has a build date of March, '04. 2/04 sounds about right as someone mentioned.

Re: Manual Mode Question

How about those with early 04'?? Will we be able to get a TCM reflash to get the countdown benefit of the 04.5?

Re: Manual Mode Question

Ted,

Correct me if I am wrong, but don't we want to select our own gears in MM...so why would I want to see 4, 3, 2, 1 on my display unless I am doing the (-) Down shift each time...maybe I am misinterpreting, but that's why I asked to be corrected right. lol ;-) (Why can't this forum have smiley faces to click on btw)???

Also, fyi...when I down shift into 2 from 3, I do it at speeds as high as 60 sometimes, but mostly in the 40-45 mph range and I never really get the "KICK" there, but I do notice it when I am going slower and not coming right off the gas, IE, coasting...which is the opposite of what the dude with the nice black sedan mentioned so the heck knows...I also have screwed around with giving the gas a blurp and then down shifting like in a true manual and that seems to work cool too.

I really use the Manual a lot more after the TS Reflash too.

Re: Manual Mode Question

I don't get the 'bang' into 2nd gear when downshifting from 3rd when I let off the gas completely (to coast for a sec. or so) and I'm going really slow like 5-15 mph. If I downshift from 3rd to 2nd going fast (like 40+ mph), it doesn't bang into 2nd either, but I typically don't downshift into 2nd when going that fast; usually at that speed, I'm in 4th or 5th, and I downshift to 3rd. I usually downshift from 5th-4th-3rd and then let the computer downshift for me to 1st when coming to a stop...it's very smooth this way Then, I start out in MM, upshifting from 1st gear.

What most people are talking about is the bang into 2nd when downshifting while going fairly slow, like you would through a parking lot, or taking a slow turn onto another street, etc. This happens often, but I think you can prevent it some by letting off the gas and coasting for a sec. or two before downshifting into 2nd gear...that's what I was getting at. Try it and see if it works.

Re: Manual Mode Question

hey bossho:

yes, we'd rather select all our gears... but on the 03's era MM, it will automatically downshift, but NOT display what gear you are in. It will not UPshift without your input, though.

So you can be tooling along on the freeway, in MM 5th, UH OH - TRAFFIC, and apply the brakes. The MM display will show 5th, but you will be in at a dead stop.

If you dropped down to, say, MM 4th, and apply gas, it will UPshift to 4th and not move to 5th without your input.

When the MM downshifts automatically, you don't know what gear you are in.

Also, I have experienced the Downshift lurch when going from 2 to 1st, rolling at about 5-10 miles and hour. Now I just let it downshift automatically, then at a dead stop, I click the MM back a few times to get into 1st. zooooom! I only physically downshift the MM between 5, 4, & 3.

Re: Manual Mode Question

Ok, that makes sense...

Oh, I went racing tonight (See my enthusiastic Post) and on the way it was a typical New England Horror Show on the highways to get the hell north and it gave me plenty of time to experiment in MM the whole hr it takes me to get north to the track and what I found was this:

If you give it a bit of gas and down shift, like I had mentioned earlier it never bangs into a gear...at least not the umpteen amount of times I did it tonight.

In MM you can safely engage 3rd from 4th at around 83 mph...it's a nice way to engine break vs. using the breaks if you are being discrete about braking. Not super high revs and no bangs ever going into 3rd.

In MM you can safely bring it from 3rd to 2nd at 60 or below and it should tach around 4 Grand and then settle right down...it doesn't sound or feel bad, but obviously you don't want to do this all the time...it can be done though. 2nd only banged a little when I was doing less than 30 and went from 3 to 2...and again, without goosing the gas to bring the revs up first.

The only time I would ever go from 2 to 1 is at less than 10 mph and as Ted said there is really no point to this so letting it just go to 1 by itself and then, while stopped, shifting it into 1 is cool.

Now go check out my Drag Strip Post with Pics!
