Manual Mode Question

I am driving an 04 loaner today and noticed that in the manual shift mode the gears automatically display (and shift) down from 4th to 1st as I slow down. Then upon initial acceleration, the gear starts in first. My 03.5 does not do this. When I kick it over, the display stays in 4th and the car is essentially in automatic mode until I reach the 4th gear. Was this a change for the 04's?

yes. I think we can get the TCU reflashed, but that is a question for the tech/mod forum.

Re: Manual Mode Question

The MM essentially acts as a semi automatic....
I wasn't sure I would like this set up when I got it, I wanted a straight MM where I decided what gear to be in.

Since then I have come to appreciate the benifits of this system.
I never use auto anymore.
When driving arround town (30mph)I leave it in 3M
When driving in 50 zones I bump to 4M
Freeways 5M

This way it's always ready for action, engine is at good revs & I can tip + or - any time.
It also keeps the Borla at a pleasant note.

Re: Manual Mode Question

I have an 04 Sedan. When I flick the shifter to the right it goes to 4 right away. It essentially acts as an auto until fourth gear. The problem is that when I decelerate to a stand still, the gear display does not countdown as the first post states. Is there something wrong with my car?

Re: Manual Mode Question

Yes, the change was made for the '04.5, and I'm very glad they did. It just didn't seem right before.

Re: Manual Mode Question

I drive an 04.5 awd sedan, and it counts down. I believe that this was typical of the 04 coupes and up, as well as the 04.5 sedans. Please correct if I am mistaken!!!

Re: Manual Mode Question

What is the cut-off for an 04.5 sedan? If I purchased my car in Nov of 03, does that mean it is just an"04?"

Re: Manual Mode Question

Yeah. the 04.5 started in Feb (i think???). Anyway, the 04.5 tranny is the same software as the coupe tranny where the manual mode won't upshift for you unless you actually do it yourself. If you try to upshift too early, the tranny will just stay in gear and the display will reflect this (no longer a top gear selector but a true manumatic).

Re: Manual Mode Question

Not sure when the cut-off date was, but my '04.5 has a build date of March, '04. 2/04 sounds about right as someone mentioned.

My '03 Coupe 'counts down' too.
One big reason I went to the Coupe from the '03 Sedan, which (at that time) didn't count down.
If I had the Sedan today, I'd have to get the reflash.

Re: Manual Mode Question

I have a March 2004 built sedan with 1600 miles. I notice that when in MM and starting to slow down, if I click from 3rd to 2nd I receive a hard jolt as it goes into 2nd. Its severe enough that I now let it downshift itself from 3rd gear until I stop.
When coming to a stop and I dont use the MM to slow down it goes from 5 to 4 to 3 and then straight to 1 at about 8-10 m.p.h.

Re: Manual Mode Question

Spoke with Jason at Inf Riverside today. he believes that there is a diff TCM. We cannot just reflash our TCM and reap the new software. Those without the countdown cannot upgrade to get it.
