I want to Switch to Synthetic Oil

I will be switching to synthetic oil soon. what i cant figure out is what synthetic i should be using. 5-30 castrol syntec isn't 100% synthetic. Do I need to be running full synthetic or are these "mostly synthetics" good enough. Am i better off running conventional oil if i dont go all the way and buy the castrol edge 100% synthetic or ams 100% synthetic oil.

Which synthetic is up for long debate. Personally, I use only full synthetics and am currently using Castrol or Castrol Edge.

That's the best stuff, IMO, I run the 0W30 but have used the 5W30 as well. And go with a good Amsoil or Wix filter.

I did a lot of reading on the oil guy forum and gave German Castrol 0w30 a shot. I will be draining it in a week or so after about 3500 miles just to get all the junk out (who knows what the previous owner used.) Then next time I plan on getting a UOA and will post here, but that wont be for a loong time not sure what interval I plan on using.....'m thinking 5k.

If your NA and change at 3-5k, you can use almost anything you want and it would be okay. (as long as the viscositites are within oem)

As long as it's not "Bob's discount recycled oil" any of the leading brand oils is good enough. Just stick with a routine maintainence schedule.

I would go Mobil 1. That's what i ran in my Maxima for the past six or seven years with no problem.
I know that the dealer uses synthetic blend. I asked them to put full synthetic for me, but they said that they don't carry it and that I would have to bring it with me, so i just had them do the blend. I'll switch to full synthetic once the warranty runs out @ 60k miles.

truth of the matter is, any synthetic works fine. i use Mobil 1, but only only because i like the label better than that of Pennzoil. AMsoil is great too, but is more expensive.

"The unique, active formula of Castrol Syntec Full Synthetic Motor Oil is engineered to provide the ultimate in engine protection and performance. Castrol Syntec can be used with confidence in every gasoline engine passenger car, new or old, regardless of oil previously used. It is fully compatible with all conventional and synthetic oils.Syntec has been tested under the severest possible conditions to prove its outstanding durability. The result? Excellent performance in essential functions such as thermal stability, low oil consumption, resistance to oxidation, soot control, engine cleanliness and wear protection."

Lifted straight from Castrol's description of Syntec. I buy 5 quart jugs of Syntec Full Synthetic for $21-25 at Wal Mart depending on the sale. Great deal!
