any substitute for a bel tension gauge ?

hi, I hope everybody had a wondering and drunken July 4th. I am thinking about change the drive belt myself, but i need a BT3373-F tool to check the belt tension. It's a belt tension gauge. That thing will run up to about 140 dollar. Is there anything is around 30 dollars, but it serves the same purpose as the tension belt gauge? If you guys know something like that or if there is a way to check the tension without buying the gauge, please let me know. Thank you very much.

thanks for the reply and the DIY you found. I guess the tension gauge is not require? since the write up doesn't check for the bell tension. If it's required , how do i know how much tension should i put on the belt?

Tighten the belts enough that when you press down on them from top side of the engine in the middle of the belts longest pulley to pulley sections with good pressure(about 8 to 14 lbs.) they give no more than 3/4 of an inch.
A good gauge is to feel them out in this manner before you loosen them.

IMHO... Even the tension gauges are useless since there isn't enough room to get one in there and measure consistently.

Use your finger to push on it. 3/4" seems a bit loose to me. I tightened my belts so there's about 1/4-1/2" of flex max.

Someone suggested twisting the belt at the long midpoints. Tighten so you can twist the belt only 90 degrees. If it squeals, tighten some more.

Sorry that's not more helpful... but I haven't figured out a good way yet. If you hear your bearings whine, then the belts are too tight.
