VW Golf and I rocked!

I was at the Chicago White Soxs game last night and on the way home when I got on the expressway, a VW Golf and I played pretty hard. I'm sure you're all thinking that there's no way a Golf can stay with a G but it's true, it rocked! I didn't go off the line with it but when it's moving, it could go! I wouldn't be surplised that it was a 1.8T with a boost controller. It was debadged except for the VW on the back end so I didn't know exactly what it was. It had a ricey exhaust and made a ton of noise. It wasn't one of those new RS32's that just came out. I could tell because the paint was a mess and it wasn't new! We were going west on the Kennedy at about 10:30 PM, riding light traffic, changing lanes, and touting with eachother. When we started, he was ahead of me. I crept up and kept with thim he whole way doing upwards of 90 most of the time, but I couldn't blow him away. I got ahead a few time because of traffic and he'd always go past me in another lane. It was a driving game for sure! I've heard that the 1.8T Golf's are quick and I didn't expext to blow him away because I could tell it was modded pretty well, it just looked like crap. At least it didn't have one of those ricer wings! Anyway, just wanted to let you know that looks are deceiving, especially with those VW's. They are quick and I've heard the RS32 will probably win out over a G! Anyone else have a Golf experience to share?

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

Most of the hondas and shitt y vw's and so on just buy the car for cheap, and drop money int he engine to have an insanely fast car!! Ive raced quite a few modded 1.8t Golf's and Gti's and its either even and I pull rarely or they just start pulling in the 8-90 region, but im not manual. They are very fast depending ont he work done to the car, those 1.8t engines can be heavily modded!!

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

My friend's friend just got an R32. It's evidently very badass. AWD and around 300hp. Evidently it has a Porsche exhaust. Not bad for $30K. It's still a Rabbit though, but it's cool.

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

I was just at VW's web site. They don't give the curb weight for the R32 but they do for the GTI 1.8T, with a manual tranny, which this guy had, it's only 2,934 pounds, 600+ pounds lighter than our G's. For an R32 with 240HP and that weight, to say you beat your friends' 3 out of 4 times would be quite impressive, considering the HP is nearly the same as our G's but the VW is 600 lbs. lighter! I'm sure with my A/T sedan, getting into in with an R32 would not produce a positive outcome for the G! And, looking at what you get for $29,100 with the R32, if you can deal with a 2-door hatchback, it's quite an impressive array of standard features and not ricey looking! Why, they even include a trip computer with milage monitor, something Infiniti forgot! But I know the car I was playin with was a manual and not an R32, and I'm glad! I was still neck and neck with it! With 180 HP on the 1.8T stock, a few low cost mods could easily top it to 200+ and with that, the G has a battle at hand! I was impressed with it. that German engineering can really get up and go! I'd be all over the new C55 AMG if I had my druthers. I'd eat CAdillac CTS V's and M3's for lunch!

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

chiphead, if you would have bought the navigation, you would have had a trip computer and mileage monitor. it also has a maintenance schedule and when you get low on gas, it direscts you to the nearest gas station.

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

"the R32 weighs 3400 pounds, according to VW (more than 300 pounds heavier than the GTI VR6), which has a predictable effect on its ability to overcome inertia. VW forecasts 0 to 60 in 6.4 seconds, about the same as the GTI 1.8T we tested in March 2002. The Evo does it in 5.0, the STi in 4.6." from car and driver!! An auto sedan can take this because to get a 6.4 you need a perfect launch basically.

But hey, its a quick great handling car!! Martin

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

My last car was a 2.8L 24v VR6 VW GTI. Those things, even stock, can give us a run for our money. torquey as hell and 200hp stock in a very light car.

If it was a 1.8T then stock it'd be about 175hp but a $300 chips adds an immediate 25hp. We still have the edge of course but a lot of people really underestimate the VWs.

And yeah an R32 has the potential to blow our doors off. I saw a vid of a twin turbo'd one and it hit 0-60 in 3.2 seconds.

Re: VW Golf and I rocked!

shodog,

If I had an extra 2 grand at the time I bought, a navi would have been nice, but for a 38 year old male with a 9 year old son, a step daughter in high school, a stepson in college, and a mortgage, going navi just didn't make sense considering the car was for commuting to work primarily. Since I don't travel for business and I know the Chi town area pretty well, I couldn't see spending 2 grand on a toy to tell me when my next service interval is, how far I've traveled, and directions to the nearest gas station. I would have loved to gone that route but instead I put on everyother option except for the body kit and navi. So, I put a little less than a grand of mods into it to make it look sharp, sound good, run better and I'm happy! Point is that a trip computer shouldn't be a function of the navi and a luxury car like the G35 should have an option for it without going the navi route.
