Plus Zero Option for OE 17" Tires?

I was wondering if there are any (decent) plus zero tire options out there to replace the stock 17" tires. I currently have the OE GoodYear GS-D's (P215/55/17 93W) on the Infiniti sport wheels and when the time comes to replace my worn tires (not for a while; I only have 3k mi. on my car now), it would be nice to get a slightly lower profile/wider looking tire on the same wheels...is this possible and if so, what size and brand(s) are possible without messing up the speedometer, ABS, etc?

According to TireRack.com, other 17" x 7" wheels for the G35 Sedan would require P235/50 17's...does this sound right or will these just be "bigger" not lower profile, wider tires? Thanks.

Re: Plus Zero Option for OE 17" Tires?

The best one to go with on the stock 5 spoke rim with negligible speedo error is 235/50/17. But there aren't a whole lot of good choices of tires in this size. The next best size with minimal error is 255/45/17 but that needs at least an 8" wide rim. There are a myriad of good tire choices in this size like S03's, F1-GSD3's, Kumho MX, G-Force T/A kDW, etc. I plan on getting new 8" wide rims with 255/45/17 tires when my stockers run out.

Re: Plus Zero Option for OE 17" Tires?

Thanks, but would the P235/50 17's be a wider, lower profile tire? That's what I'm looking for in my next set. I think there's some Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and XGT Z4's available in that size, which I hear are pretty decent. My GY P215/55 17 GSD's are ok so far, but don't seem to be very wide "low profile" tires, and I really want to keep my wheels...they look pretty good on my G35, imo. Thanks.

Re: Plus Zero Option for OE 17" Tires?

Why wait till you've racked up 15 maybe 20k and you've lost that brand new car feel to get the tires you know you want now? It's only money. Besides, you can sell them on EBay and get good money for the tires that are on the car now. I've done this. The un-mounted tires weigh about 55 lbs. a pair. Use strong strapping (adhesive style) tape to bind them in pairs. A couple of wraps at 12 and 6 then a couple wraps at 3 and 9. Finish the job with some plastic wrap (available at the same packaging/office supplies store where you going to get the strapping tape) and voila, your old wheels are ready for shipping. It cost about $80 FedEx ground rate to ship my 4 Goodyear RSAs from Seattle to GA. I ended my auction early when someone offered me $249 + shipping.

Hey wait. You didn't ask for advice on selling your tires did you? The 235 in your example is the tire width (across the tread) in millimeters. (235/25.4=9.25in. vs. 215/25.4=8.46in.). The 50 is the height of the sidewall expressed as a percentage of the width. (235x.5=117.5mm vs. 215x.55=118.25mm). The 17 is the rim diameter, of course. So, comparing the OEM tires with 235/50/17's will give you a tire that is substantially wider, 9.25 vs. 8.5 inches, but whose sidewall is nearly identical. That's always going to be the case on a 17" wheel if you concern is not messing with the speedometer. I don't know about ABS. My guess is it's pretty flexible to overall tire circumference.

Bottom line, if you want lower profile tires and don't want to mess with the speedometer, you're going to have to spring for bigger rims.

Re: Plus Zero Option for OE 17" Tires?

Thanks for the advice. No, there's no need to sell my tires on Ebay and buy new ones, as I am in a nice position since my dealer's service dept. scratched my car a few times 2 months ago and I demanded something in return for their screwups and the inconvenience (after their body shop fixed the scratches naturally ;-). They asked me what I wanted, and I replied..."How about a new set of tires when these wear out?" The service mgr. agreed and I had him put it in writing, so when my GY GSDs wear out at about 15k, I will be going back to my Infiniti dealer for a new set of tires at n/c; a set of new $800 tires at n/c...not a bad deal, huh?

Anyway, I'll have to think about the bigger, wider P235/50 17's on my Infiniti sport wheels when the time comes; might not be too bad, although they won't be lower profile. Thanks.
