2005 G35 sedan smart key

Over the weekend I lost the fob unit of my smart key. The mechanical key was still intact to my key ring so I can still operate my car, I am just missing the actual fob unit. I have been trying to find out if I have to buy a whole new key unit and have it programmed by the dealer, or if the actual mechanical key has the programming in it instead of the fob unit with the buttons.

There are a ton of these on ebay for pretty cheap and before I buy one I am wondering if the programming lies in the mechanical key could I just buy the fob and mechanical key and use that fob with my key or would I still have to have the unit cut and programmed.

Thanks

Technically, i think because you still have the key all you need is another fob. The chip is in the key i beleive.

I am not 100% sure though so hopefully someone else knows

the chip is in the key 100%.

you just buy a new remote part. and reprogram that. you can reprogram the remote yourself. Buy a used one off EBAY.

to help you out. here is my FCC: KBRTN001

there are a lot of keys that look like the key but you need the one that matches the FCC. I have a 05 sedan so yea should be a match.

I just checked out of curiousity and was able to open lock and start the car with just the i-key fob portion (I removed the physical key). So the programming for the i-key lies in the fob. So you can buy one off ebay and get it re-programmed.
