Auto Headlight Issue.

For the most part I think having the option of auto headlights is a good idea. In fact, 99% of the time I'm in the auto headlight mode. Where I have a concern is when it's daylight outside and I pull into my garage and immediately the headlights go on. I'm wondering if having them go on only to turn off moments later is bad for them. I always was under the impression that turning a light on, having it heat up, then turning it off right away and having it cool down was bad for the lighting element.

Any thoughts?

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

I wondered the same thing about switching on & off every time I went in& out of the garage.
During long days of summer I didn't use auto setting.

I may go back now that days are getting shorter

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

Not sure, but I believe you got a new '04.5 right? I doubt it's bad, but even if it is, don't worry about it...it's under warranty ;-) Enjoy!

btw - I use my Auto headlights all the time, but one thing I noticed is that unlike our '03 FX35, there's no sensitivity setting on the G35 which stinks. When it starts to pour during the day here in Florida, my headlights almost never turn on, so I have to manually turn them on (and you really need them on in a rainstorm, especially on the highway). I wish Infiniti made daytime running lights mandatory on the U.S. spec'd vehicles like the ones in Canada. Funny too, b/c Lexus has daytime running lights for the U.S. vehicles. I don't know why Infiniti wouldn't have done the same; it's safer.

The sensitivity can be set to 4 different levels.
However you need someone with a code programmer to do it.
(or a friendly dealer)

You'll find <font color=red>Gordgee</font color=red>'s BCM customization chart HERE in our FAQ/DIY forum, that explains the optional settings.
If you explain to the dealer that the setting is not suitable for your driving needs, they may not charge for a reset with their Consult II scan tool.
Give it a try, and G/L

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

Thanks for all the valuable input. Next time I'm at the dealership I'll ask him about resetting the sensitivity. Will the lights suddenly turning on then off hurt the HID lights?

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

My dealer told me that those settings are bogus and they can't be changed, that they change the delay for the interior lights or something. Kinda pissed me off but what can you do? It says "HEAD LAMP" in it right there... dealers are a crap shoot these days..

Personally i'm gonna get a small circle of window tint and put it over the sensor.

Uuuummmm.....
Wouldn't window tint make them come on sooner?

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

The 2004 G35 Sedan has 4 sensitivity settings. Tell dealer to refer to page LT-83 in the factory manual. There are 4 sensitivity settings plus 8 off-delay settings.

The sensitivity setiings are: normal, sensitive, desensitized, insensitive (sound like a psychologist wrote the manual).

The off-delays are 45 sec, "OFF", 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180 sec.

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

Can the dealer change the off settings too, or is that something we can do?

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

The gadget you need is "CONSULT-II" with a (Nissan, I guess) "Consult-II Convertor". The dealer (or Consult-II operator) works thru desplay screens (on the gadget) and selects the settings desired. Not unlike configuring a PC's CMOS. I did a quick Google search, CONSULT-II several thousand bux. I don't see any instructions for any adjustments without CONSULT-II

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

I don't know for sure, but I thought that I heard it was factory recommended to avoid unnecessary, short on/off cycles. Does anyone else think they have heard that before?

Also, the greatest stress on a light filament is when it first turns on. That is why most common incandescent light bulbs [from what I have experienced] burn / blow out right when you switch them on - not when they are in a constant state.

However, I am not sure how this would relate to the G35's headlights, as I've never seen the actual bulb itself - just trying to apply some possibly relative thoughts to this situation.

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

From reading the manual, turning the headlight (xenon) on and off is very bad for the light. The xenon gas needs a few seconds to stablelize. I think that how my friends CL-s burnt out her ballast at 51k miles.

I usually trun the headlight to off position and switch to auto at night time.

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

I read that in the manual about not turning them on and off quickly so I never use the auto headlight feature...

Re: Auto Headlight Issue.

But, the panic alarm has them going off and on quickly as well, so that contradicts the owners manual IMO!
