Gas gauge not reading FULL?

I have a 2003 G35 sedan that the gas gauge will not read full on after completely filling the tank. Usually it will go to about 2 clicks from full. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. Last week it had the 35000 mile service and I mentioned the problem to the service tech who told me when I picked it up that g35's in the midwest areas can have this problem due to residue build up on the fuel sending unit. All the dealership did was add some fuel treatment and suggest that i do the same for the next 4 tanks of gas. I don't know about anyone else, but after 800 dollar or so 35000 mile service I'm not paying money out of my own pocket to fix the problem. Of course the fuel gauge still does not work properly after the second tank since my service.

Hmmmm, why would that be specific to the Midwest, unless the gas is bad, I would stay on them about this for sure.

I had this problem for awhile, but it disappeared without any specific action on my part. (There may have been some discussion about this over at freshalloy.com - try a search there.)

Re: Gas gauge not reading FULL?

Hey bro,

My 2003 did the same thing.....took it back to the dealership and they knew exactly what i was talking about. It was fixed under warranty. However, they did have to order a new fuel sensor part which took about 3 weeks. So even though your baby is only registering 3/4 full (as mine was), its really topped off. Hope this helps

Re: Gas gauge not reading FULL?

I reset my ECU which helped for a while but the problem came back. The dealer was aware of this fault and replaced the tank sensor under warranty -- everything fine now.

Re: Gas gauge not reading FULL?

I had a similar problem on my 04 Maxima that I recently sold. I had just filled the tank after I went home and started up the car again after a couple of hours, the tank read low fuel. After I started driving it is gradually went back up to where it was supposed to be.

Re: Gas gauge not reading FULL?

My gas gauge never read full from Day 1. It was always just below 7/8 of a tank. I finally (at 18k) remembered to tell them and they replaced the sending unit. I filled my car to the “full” indicator for the first time about a week ago and I can’t believe I waited so long. Personally, I wouldn’t let this drop, it sounds like you need yours replaced too.

Re: Gas gauge not reading FULL?

Same here --- I live in Indianapolis. It was this way for about 3 months and then one day went away so I have not had anything fixed yet.
