Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

Hello all,
I have a brand new 2004 G35 leather model 5AT that I bought about a month ago and now have 1400 miles on it. since the day that I bought it the car has a Shake in the steering around 60+ miles per hour. I toke the G in this weekend to get serviced and I got a loaner G35 leather model 5AT just like mine but it has 7400 miles on it. from the moment i left the dealer this loaner drove totally drifferent from my car, seems to have heavier steering, and a more solid ride. finally my service manager calls me and told me that my G needed new tires, that my current tires had road force and that they couldn't fix it. today i Picked up my G with the new tires on it and thought everything was gonna be just like the loaner car. low and behold my car was still doing the same shaking and shimmy and now i feel like my car drives like crap since the loaner car drove perfect. anyone have any ideas about this. oh by the way my G also pulls to the sides the loaner i had did not and both the loaner and my G both have the standard suspension.

Have the tires rebalanced. They may just not be doing it properly.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

Speed-related vibration is almost always a tire balance problem. Have you had this problem since the car was new? Missing any wheel weights lately? In any event, get them rebalanced.

But your observation of being less "solid" is harder to diagnose. If your call is pulling excessively (other than the normal slight pulling due to road camber), it may suggest an alignment problem, which may also be causing a steering stability problem. The other possibility is that your loaner had different tires - which can give completely different road feel from brand to brand.

The dealer should be replacing those tires if that is the problem being it is so new, but they could also have the tire manufacturer replace them.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

Hate to be blunt, but why would you buy a car that had a shake when you test drove it? Unless you didnt get it out on the highway above 60 (which is incomprehensible). How many miles did your car have on it when you drove it off the lot? To have to need new tires on a car with 1400 miles is indicating some serious alignment/balance problems. You may even have a bent wheel. These alloys are pretty easy to tweak if you hit a pothole, curb, or speedbump too hard. Either way, be firm, and dont let them off until it is smooth as glass like a new G should be. You have a damaged car right now and they need to fix it right.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

Well the car had 11 miles and yes i test drove it but they had testers so it wasn't the same same car, and the loaner and my car both had bridgestone turanzas EL42 so everything is the same. they also did rebalance them and they have this high tech machine that showed them that the older tires were deffective. anyhow they are going to pick up my car at my house and drop of another G35 loaner. I just hope that they can make it smooth as glass like my loaner was and i also wonder why the loaner seemed to have a heaver steering feel then my car does.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

What do you mean by "heavier", like more solid?

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

seems to go better over the bumps doesn't seem as jiggly, still firm but not as jiggly. plus the steering feels more heavy so that to me is more solid

Mine has felt solid since day one, not at all "jiggly"

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

Have you had a service manager drive the car (with you in it) to get his/her opinion about the way the car drives? You say that your car "seems" to have a lighter steering feel and "seems" to feel jiggly. How subtle is the difference between your car and the loaner? Is it really obvious? Or is it "almost the same" but a little different? If there is a big difference, it will be obvious to the service manager, too.

What you've described sounds like the difference I've heard some people comment on between the G35 and G35x because of the added 300 lbs. of AWD weight and heavier suspension components on that model.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

your disc brake rotors are warped...have them cut and re-surfaced that will for sure take care of the problem....if that doesnt work then one of your control arms may be loose....

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

I bought my car in the city .. I took it on a two lane 50mph road and had it going better than that but once I took delivery I noticed a shaking at around 70mph. They changed my tires and balanced the wheels a few times and finally got the vibration to stop.

I guess if I bought another car there I'd insist on taking about 1/2 test drive to get out of the city and do some high speed runs.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

Could your loaner possibly have had the Sport package while yours does not? There would definately be a difference in feel between the Sport and Non-Sport tuned suspension.

Re: Shimy and shaking at higher speeds?

NO as i stated that both my car and the 2 loaners i had where both the same models, no sport package. and all had the same bridgestone turnazas EL42. i toke it back on Thursday afternoon and they gave me another loaner, this one drove just like the first loaner. Friday i get a call that my car is ready. I take my car home and Finally NO SHAKING!!!! or NO SHIMMY!!!! I was so happy no my car drives just like the loaners I was given. they said that the front two tires wheer unblanced. Just happy it was just the balancing nothing major like the steering system or suspension.
