Sedan 6MT, First time in BAD traffic
I have about 600 miles on my 6MT, last night I experienced bad traffic for the first time. Had me bumper to bumper for over half hour. The clutch was killing me. Does anyone else feel the clutch is overly stiff (high level of resistance). I have had an integra for 8 years and the clutch is much lighter. And don't get me started about the shifter, too notchy and too much vibration.
Not only is it more comfortable to drive but I am able to drive the integra so much smoother then the G35.
This car is easy to drive fast but no so easy to drive smoothly.

It seems like the more power the car has, the stiffer the clutch. That was my experience. I used to drive a Toyota Corolla that boasted a whole 105hp. That clutch was VERY soft and easy to drive. I did drive my friend's 2000 Audi S4 which has 250hp and that clutch was VERY stiff. So my guess is, the more powerful the car, the stiffer the clutch? It would make sense since the clutch has be much stronger to handle the greater torque and power.

The gear shifter will lossen up some after you break it in. But the clutch is still as heavy as the first day I bought it. I don't know why they made it so heavy for. I wonder if there is an adjustment for it. Next time you take it in to Infiniti ask if there is an adjustment for the clutch and i'll do the same.

After I bought my AT, I test drove an MT just to feel how it shifted. I liked the short throws, but I also felt the clutch was a little heavy. I'm surprised because even with higher horsepower, it isn't necessary to have that heavy of a clutch. My other car is a 5 speed supercharged Toyota Solara, with an upgraded aftermarket clutch from Clutchmasters. That clutch feels much lighter than the MT G35 clutch and is designed to control over 300 hp. I was a little disappointed in the feel of the MT G35.

Re: Sedan 6MT, First time in BAD traffic
Not saying the 6mt clutch needs to be as stiff as it is... but in general as the hp goes up the clutch action needs to get stiffer. The stiffness feel of the clutch is caused by the stiffness of the springs in the pressure plate. To transfer a lot of torque there needs to be a lot of pressure between the pressure plate and the clutch disk. If the pressure were too light higher torques would overcome the friction torque between the plate, flywheel and disk...and the clutch would slip even though it is fully engaged. You guys ever driven a mustang? Now that's a stiff clutch. No need for it to be that stiff either. At the time I drove them, they were only putting out 225 hp. You definitely got in the habit of putting it in neutral at stop lights. Clutches dont loosen up over time unfortunately. I'm afraid we're stuck with it. I personally thought it had a nice strong feel while not being too stiff.

This all depends how the manufacturer designed the car. For example a Boxster has a very easy clutch. I think it is hydraulic but im not sure. But ya I have a coupe and in Los Angeles it is a killer to have a stiff clutch.

First let me say, even with all the G35 short comings, I still beleive this the best car for the money.
That said, I think Nissan cut a few corners to many. Heavy Cluth, bad vibration thru the gear shifter, and instead of researching and testing better suspension setups for a more stable car when driving aggresive, they just threw in the traction control to keep the car in check. Not to mention posting MPG figures that are not even close to reality on the window sticker.
But then again I guess if they didnt cut corners we would of paid around $40,000 instead of $33,000 (on average).

If you live in heavily congested areas, such as LA, Houston, New York, Boston, etc. it probably makes much more sense to go with the auto/manual tranny version of the G35 which still allows for spirited driving/self-shifting during times of lighter traffic.
I applaude all auto manufacturers who provide similar auto/manual gear boxes. Yes, a true manual w/ clutch is driving in its purest form, and yes you gain better control over the engine and car with a real manual tranny, but for today's driving conditions in many cities throughout America, I feel the auto/manual combo is the smartest choice for most drivers.

G35Couper,
My car before this was a 5 speed accord...I didn't like the G that much (as far as the clutch and shifting went) when I first got it...after a while you'll get used to it. I still have my accord in my garage (waiting to sell it) and I drive it every once in a while just to keep it running...anywho...the clutch is so easy on that thing to compress but after driving the G since November, driving that accord feels like I'm driving a go-cart or something.
Anywho...guess my point is that you'll get used to it...it's just different than what you're used to right now.
