Normally doesnt seem to go into 5th gear! HELP!

Hey guys,

I believe I have a bit of a problem, although I never really noticed it since I bought the car last year.

I drive on the highway and it doesnt SEEM as though it is in 5th gear.

The way I checked was simply by switching it into manumatic mode, and it shows 4 on the dash. I am assuming by it having a 4, it is STILL in 4th gear, correct? Unless this is some triptronic feature I never heard of.

So... what can be the issue?

The car is covered under warranty, but I got to fork over $150 diagnostic fee if there is or isnt anything wrong with it.

I'd rather check with the resident experts on this great forum first!

The car is a 2005 G35x sedan.

THANKS A LOT!

mine can go into 5th gear anytime im over 30 pretty much in manumatic mode. I would count the shifts when its just in auto and see if it actually doesnt go into 5th gear.

Before I swapped the diff for a 3.5 I would be running at 2800 RPM's at 80 in 5th gear. Check that on your car. Also, can you shift into 5th when you are using manumatic? If you switch over to manumatic while driving in 5th the car automatically downshifts into 4th assuming you are about to accelerate.

Mine always goes to 4th when i switch over to manumatic mode on the highway.

In my '06x, 80MPH is about 3000RPM in 5th gear....give or take a hundred or so RPM

LOL it was confusing me too how it always shows 4th when i swich over to manu mode, i thought it was just my car and i was about to take it to my dealer. but i think my G is different from what u guys were saying, it shows 4th no matter what gear position it's actually in (even when it's standing still), and it always shows the same gear position in the dash even tho the gearbox is shifting down when decelerating.

When you shift into manumatic the car "thinks" you are going to be passing someone and need to downshift, therefore it puts it into 4th. It's actually in 5th, and if you change it to 5th in manumatic you will see the RPMs go down

if it shows 4th no matter what, and when its standing still, then you DO have a problem with it lol

I got confused and thought your post was the OP's post.

03 and 04's have a different shift logic. Not quite sure how it works, but it's different than the 05/06's.

I'd ask an 03/04 owner how their setup works

I thought that showing only 4th gear on the thing was a known issue with the 03s.. I know i came across that issue when i first got the car and was researching the rough 2-3 shift in manumatic mode

What did you find out about that? My '06 has the rough 2-3 shift too sometimes when i shift manually at wide open throttle.

I've read that it's just how it it?
