I completely agree. The route I took, as opposed to the $1100 the dealer quoted me to replace the entire undercarriage, was to buy a set of seats cheap and take out the precious gear from each one. Then I parted out the seats (leather, switches, airbags etc) and brought the repair cost way way down. Was a pita but it worked.

I now have a spare gear and I know I could sell the stupid piece of plastic for $100 if I wanted to. It's worth more to me to have a spare. When it comes time to get rid of the car I will sell the plastic gear piece if I have not already used it. I would disable the entry/exit feature if I did not have a backup.

It is an absolute crime this part is not available separately. It would cost $5 even at ridiculous dealer prices, and it takes 15 minutes to fix, if you have to unbolt the seats - and you might not even need to do that.

This gear and the spark plug gaskets being molded into the valve covers are my top 2 peeves about this car.

I think jimNC needs to trust Mustang5L5 with his extra gear long enough to get a machined version made.

Just an idea...

I don't want to take someone's good gear just in case it get lost in the mail or something.

If it's easy to remove..i'll just take it off my own seat.

But I would at least want to make a PDF of the part so guys can take it to a machinist and get one made. Hard to do after it's mangled up, but a cad drawing would be the best.

I just did a little Googling and found this link: http://www.odometergears.com/infiniti.html

You can order the gear from them for $65, plus $4 shipping Priority Mail.

This is the answer guys.

Someone should pin that link somewhere.

Edit: they even have instructions for replacing the gear

I just bookmarked the gear site. I've got 2 cars with memory seats that get used every day. The wife's got an '05 Maxima SL with memory seat. So far so good though.

Thanks for this link. It's a godsend for those who have had the seat issue. Mustang5L5 added it to the FAQ's for quick reference.

THAT is amazing!!! Thanks.

I did get quoted between $600 and $800 because someone at the dealer said the entire rail assembly needed to be replaced.

I am debated clicking order and checking my gear to make sure it is in fact broken on my current one. I mean, the left side does try to move forward and the right side won't. It makes complete sense that this is the issue.

I am also wondering if I should get one or just go ahead and get two now.

That is exactly what happened with mine and I would be shocked if it weren't your gear. If you follow the replacement instructions on that website you will see how easy it would be to take the endcap off and you can eyeball it without removing it.

I'm kinda curious to hear the story behind how this company came to make this part. Almost wonder if someone that works there owns a G.
