A 4 banger wouldn't neccessarily be for the eco-crowd. Typically when makers offer smaller engines, it's so people can get into that class of car cheaper. A BMW 323i is cheaper than the 330i.
For the record, BMW offers smaller engines and turbo disesels for the 3 series lineup. I'd rock a turbo diesel 3 series any day. They got some good reviews.

The 4-banger G will not replace the VQ series. It will simply be an addition. Secondly, it is very likely that the Benz motor will be turbocharged and will probably be making in the neighborhood of 225-250hp.
Benz is a pretty high-tech group so I wouldn't right them off. They've developed a gasoline turbo I4 that runs like a diesel, improving MPGs to within the same range as a diesel. That's huge and that's the future. Within a few years, Benz will have this motor on the market. It's called the DiesOtto motor that makes 240hp and 300ft/lbs.

I cringe everytime I see a V6 Camaro or Mustang out on the road. There are basically two demographics that drive them...teenage girls and white trash middle-aged men who drive the pi** out of them. Every now and then you'll see a teenage boy driving one who has slapped on some Flowmasters and Cobra/Z28 badges. In my opinion, nothing sounds worse than a V6 with Flowmasters.

The new V6s are putting down numbers close to the previous V8s and well beyond the V8s of the 80s.
Now if Nissan could come up with a Turbo 4 that was close to the VQ35 in terms of reliability, HP, and close to the price to repair, with a little better economy, then I have absolutely no problem with it.
Trouble is, they don't really have that.

My gripe is that when a model with a tiny engine (v6 for the stangs/camaros, 4 banger for the G) is offered it kind of seems like the company is selling out to me. Not to mention, when I see someone driving one of the tiny engine models of a performance car I always think of them as posers.

I was referring to previous generations. The new ones are putting down some impressive numbers, but you can still always tell a V6 model compared to a V8. They are typically the stripped down base model and just look bad. Maybe now you can get one loaded with a V6. That is the only way I would ever buy one.

Sadly, I bet a 4 cylinder G would put down what our 6's make right now. With the escalation of horsepower numbers the last few years, I'm waiting until the day my car is so old a Corolla can smoke me. V6 Camaro's making what, 304hp? The last year model SS put down 305hp... So I wouldnt be surprised to see a 4 cyl G25? making 250-260..

^I'm not so sure it would. Or, if it did, I find it doubtful that it would hold up like the VQ.
You're right about the new V6 Camaros, but they're still not up to the old ones. The 02 Camaro SS was rated at 320, but put them on a dyno, and even the 4-speed slushbox would put over 300 TO THE GROUND. Plus, those didn't weigh as much as the new ones either.
Even if they do build a I4 G, I really doubt it will be as good as even the first gen V6.
