Stuck in manual mode

On Friday night when i went to park my car the shifter accidently shifted over into the manual mode. I tried to put it back into drive but the shifter was stuck. I cant take my keys out or put the car into park. I have 74k on the odometer and im not trying to see the dealer. I noticed it happened to quite a few ppl with these cars and it didnt take long for the car to be fixed. I was wondering does anyone know what the problem is.

Have you tried popping the cover off the shift lock button and hittting it with a small screwdriver? It's on the top left of the shifter plate. Might release the shifter, I'm just not sure that it will work.

Did you try driving the car a short distance to see if that would free it?

I know it won't start now. I was wondering if he had tried that before shutting it down. I had a car before that had gotten stuck in reverse, but letting the car move released it. It was weird and only happened once. That's why I thought to ask.

The linkage for manual mode goes straight into the valve body. Hopefully it's nothing in the tranny that broke off preventing you from re-engaging the auto linkage. You can still shift in manny mode right? up/down?

I'd start taking off the cover/pieces from up top to see if there isn't anthying loose/broken before I took to the dealer or anyone. That is, if you are comfortable doing that.
