Re: 20hp diff between the coupe and sedan

RetAF, get a sense of humor....
Im sure even a ""Seasoned American"" like yoruself would rather see a ""Beautiful Young Lady"" dirving a coupe then a ""Seasoned American""

Dang Politically correct america.. bahh humbug..

By the way I would of bought the coupe over my sedan, but there was not enough head room in the coupe... And when I found out the sedan was getting a 6 speed transmission, i was stoked.... In my opinion, I got the best of both worlds, since I ended up getting a 350z also... Funny thing is There's more head room in the 350z Roadster then the G35 Coupe.. Go figure..

Eldy... we raced under controlled conditions at the track. Nobody ever said we couldn't take ride along(S). Next time it'll cost you two E tickets!

And nobody's beat my record yet!

Re: 20hp diff between the coupe and sedan

If the sedan requires premium, just think of the money I'll save staying with the 2004 vs buying the 2005.

Not just the 10-20 cents per gallon, but the extra taxes and depreciation.

Jericho:

I would never say that the FX is virtually the same as the G because it shares some components. Part sharing is a commom practice these days as it reduces developmental and manufacturing costs. I'm only saying that the "FM" vehicles all share the same platform.

I would also venture to say that technically there's no difference in the steering (they both use the same ratio of 15.9:1). The difference you are feeling is most likely due to the stiffer suspension (steering input is transferred more quickly and directly), lower ride height (provides less body roll for quicker steering response), and shorter tire sidewalls (again, providing a crisper feel). Keep in mind that all of these differences are also due to various options and packages available on both cars. The biggest difference, in regards to this comparison, would come between a coupe equipped with 18" wheels and a sedan with the base suspension. I'm sure the differences you noticed would be less between a 6MT sedan (or a 5AT sedan with sport suspension) and a base coupe with 17" wheels and no Brembos. However, there would still be a difference.

Both iterations of the G35 serve different purposes. Most likely, a potential sedan buyer is not going to consider the coupe -- although I did for a split second, wondering if I could fit a child safety seat in the back of the coupe (I would have rather had the coupe but couldn't justify it). As someone stated earlier, the sedan is for somebody who needs to carrying more than two passengers or has children. The coupe is more for single person, whether that person be unmarried or an empty-nester, or a person with some disposable income and needs a toy.

I've seen plenty of "old ladies" driving coupes and sedans. I've seen plenty of younger people driving both cars too. It all comes down to what you need the car for. You can't stereotype the car (or any car for that matter). That's like saying the Corvette is for balding, middle-age men who wear gold chains, have lots of chest hair, and use Viagra. While it may be partially true, I've seen plenty of Corvette owners who don't fit that bill.

Re: 20hp diff between the coupe and sedan

By the way, I was recently going through an old issue of Automobile magazine (November 2002) and came across a comparison between the G35C and 330Ci (page 50).

Here's a quote directly from the article:

"In the G35 sedan, the V-6 makes 260 horsepower, while the coupe gets 280 thanks to a less restrictive exhaust system. (The 350Z makes 287 horsepower.) The coupe's V-6 also has different valve timing from the sedan's, and it requires premium fuel.

'The main difference between the G35 coupe and the Nissan 350Z,' says Kazutoshi Mizuno, chief vehicle engineer for the FM platform, 'is balance. The driver is closer to the front wheels in the Z, which is all sports car, whereas the G35, a GT sports coupe, is like a carbon-frame tennis racket, with perfect balance. The 350Z is more like a metal racket--very strong.'"
