replacing belt driven fan?
For those of you with 03/03.5 sedans with the belt driven mechanical radiator fan - has there been a successful replacement of the mechanical fan with an electric fan? If so, does anyone have a write up or DIY on this procedure?

I think you'd get much easier and cheaper horsepower gains by upgrading the exhaust and installing a better intake system. I can't imagine changing to an electric fan being an easy or inexpensive thing to do - plus you may have some serious warranty issues if anything goes wrong.
BTW - What does the 5AT"S" stand for? If it's supercharged, I don't think you're going to notice much of a difference.

You should pm DaveO. He has done a couple of these conversions. He helped me change out the mechanical fan to an electric fan. Total cost was around $230.00. Pm me if I can answer any of your questions.

Re: replacing belt driven fan?
One of my next mods, as soon as I can get some time off to run up to the upper desert!
We have seen gains similar to that of installing the UR crank pulley. SoCalTed vs. DaveO and SoCalTed vs. Alagolfer on dynos.

Re: replacing belt driven fan?
Awesome! Thanks so much guys. The last time I PM'd DaveO, he was still working out the kinks on the procedure. It sounds like he found a winning combination. PM to DaveO aside, can you give me any indication of the difficulties in accomplishing this? Can your "average-somewhat-mechanically-inclined home-modder" get this done with simple hand tools and enthusiasm?

Re: replacing belt driven fan?
Great. I am under the assumption that this change to e-fans from mech fans will reduce or get rid of the truck-like noise the 03/03.5 make at stop and go or at slow speeds, correct? I'd just like to get rid of that sound and I would like to do it cheaply but seeing as it's $230 makes me think twice about it. Also, seeing it takes about 8 hours...I mean geez, that's a long time.

Re: replacing belt driven fan?
I had a good long talk with DaveO yesterday - the G driver who pioneered this conversion. It sounds a bit tricky and complicated, but I'm planning on doing the conversion when my company shuts down in December. Until then, I'll be gathering the new parts and identifying where and how they tap in.
For those who like tinkering on their cars, 8 hours sounds like an enjoyable day in the garage. Plus, DaveO states that there's a clear horsepower increase following the conversion, which totally makes sense. He compared it to a crank pulley replacement. For $230, that's on par with most of the other bolt on upgrades in terms of price per horsepower.
