Car overheating when stopped but ok when driving

Get a flush done and get the thermostat pressure checked. I have one done every two years.
What was the temperature outside when you first noticed the problem? My temp gauge did the dame thing as yours this summer as I was stuck in heavy traffic with the AC going..it was around 36C( 100F) that day. I blasted the heater and the engine temp dropped back to normal.
I haven't seen my car do this before or since....I have the mechanical fan set up since my car is an early '03.

Does your e fan even work?
Turn the ac on and see if the fan comes on. Heating up at idle and cooling on the highway is a sign of poor airflow through the rad. Most common cause is a dead e fan.
If I remember correctly, infinti extended the warranty period on the fan. I forget the mileage though...letter is in my car.
Of course a coolant flush wouldn't hurt either.

^ His fluid is also dark which means it needs changing asap, Its probably not transferring heat too well so when the air flow goes down the fluid is not dispacing enough heat. When he is driving and gets more air flow the fluids lack of displacing heat is nil with the amount of air coming in.
That could also be it
