Car overheating when stopped but ok when driving

Just a few days ago I noticed when I stopped the temp would start going up. Once i started moving it would go back down. I was stuck in traffic and wasn't moving and it started going up. I had to put it in netural and it worked. I checkd the overflow and it was full but was a bit dark in color like oil had got into it. Should I flush it out and do oil change? I need help!!!! Thanks

What year is your car? Is your fan spinning when in gear when your stopped or in park?

If you have oil mixed with coolant,it will be like chocolate milk, if you cant tell from looking, best way to find out is to send a sample of your oil to a lab to have it checked, http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ they send a free kit you just fill up and mail it back with 22 bucks and you get a report back.

But if your coolant is just dark then that's a sign it needs some changing. When was the last time it was changed?

Change you fluid and thermostat before you do anything. If that doesn't work your motor is probably blown.

Hey, I had the same problem about a few days ago. My car is a 2003 G35 sedan A/T with 157,xxx miles. When I was waiting for my brother in a parking lot with the car parked and the A/C on, the temp on the engine was slowly going up past the normal mark. To drop the temp, I just opened the hood and turned on the heater with the A/C off to lower the temp. BTW, I'm from So Cal and wondered if the blazing 110 degree weather a few days ago could have contributed to this. The car's fine now.

It's a 2004. I will do the coolant flush and change the thermostat. I will also look at the fan to see if that is the issue. Even if its not hot outside it will overheat. Anyone know the standard warranty info? I bought it used a few years ago and the dealer is no longer there. I have about 46k on it. thanks

you dont have an aftermarket radiator do you?? mine overheats in traffic with my koyo and slim line fans...mine is more because I have a racing radiator and my fans are not built in with an enclosure like the oem setup is....I am needing to add a pusher fan on the front side to help keep the car cooled down.

you might have air in the system! there is a bolt on the battery side that you need to run the ac on high and then loosen it and see if there is a constant flow coming out or if there is air basically bleed the a/c system just like the brakes
could help for a few bucks you spent on coolant just make sure the coolant reservoir is full and more doesnt get in

Does your e fan even work?

Turn the ac on and see if the fan comes on. Heating up at idle and cooling on the highway is a sign of poor airflow through the rad. Most common cause is a dead e fan.

If I remember correctly, infinti extended the warranty period on the fan. I forget the mileage though...letter is in my car.

Of course a coolant flush wouldn't hurt either.

Warranty on fan motors was extended to 96 months/100k miles.

So if you turn your ac on and your e fan doesn't turn on, the motor is toast and may be covered under the extended warranty period.

I'll check out the fan when i get off work. I have about 46k so I'm sure it should be covered until that extended warranty.

You would be covered to 2012 or 100k....assuming the fan is dead
