Angry Stealer-ship: maintenance quote?!

so i went to the dealership today to get my oil change, and turns out i need to replace:

all 4 brake pads, rear rotors, transmission flush, brake fluid flush and power steering flush for:

$800 dollars in parts and with labour it will be around $1000...
they had the price at 1200-1300 dollars at first but i brought it down to 1000.

should it really be costing this much to do this?

please help!

^ Post this in the Canada regional forums and get local prices from the locals.

But - you usually don't go to the dealership for service to save money. Price out the parts and I'm sure you could get a local member or a local mechanic to do the labor for maintenance at a fraction of what the dealership wants.

For example, my local Infiniti wanted $1100 for a 30k mile service. I went to a local shop owned by 2 master Nissan/infiniti techs and got it done for less than $300.

Power steering flush is 7 bucks + 2 buck Turkey Baster. And you do it your self.

You just simply suck out the old fluid put new fluid in. And do this 3-4 times a day of driving apart. Then you can do it every 15k miles..ect

Don't flush the tranny. Do a drain and flush....$50 and quicker than an oil change.

Power steering flush....$7 in fluid

Brake fluid flush $6 in fluid

New brakes? Well you don't say what model you have. I think I paid about $200 for my oem front brakes that I installed myself.

Of course, if you are taking it to the dealer for an oil change...you might not have the ability to do this stuff yourself.

OPS, how many miles is on your car? Those DIY vids are great help.
At 30k, I bought Amsoil tranny oil and diff oil for $100. Castrol Syntec/PureOne for $26. When my front brakes need replacement, I got Hawk pads for $65 and Power stop drill rotors for ~$160. All these only add up to $360 US dollars. All are easy to do except on undoing the 22mm caliper/rotor bolts.

I would buy the parts yourself and take it to your local mechanics.

You can take your car to a Nissan dealer, they charge a little less for labor/hour rate.

Everything on your list can be done in about 3 hours with a beer break (you have 2 more years, my friend) by someone who knows the cars fairly well.

1.) Buy all of the items yourself, you can probably get them for less than $250 if you shop around.

2.) Throw out a post on G35Driver's regionals saying what you need done. Offer them a nice lunch. ($20 for the both of you)

3.) When someone answers, ask them if they have the tools to do the job. This is imperative when doing the brakes!

4.) When the job is done and buttoned up, flip the guy $100. He'll be stoked to get the money and $100 is money well spent to get a little education on how to fix your car.

All in all, you can do this for $400.

Stay away from the dealership. Dealerships thrive on people who don't care enough about cars to do the work themselves... and they will GOUGE your wallet in the process.

We can get you the parts you need cheaper than that. That seems a little high.

I factored it a little high for a few reasons: I'm not sure what everything costs in Canada, he's 17 and probably doesn't have a credit card to take advantage of online pricing.

Roh, I forgot to mention to check out the vendors/sponsors on this site. The pricing is great and a lot of them (can't speak for all of them) know these cars inside and out.
