You still need hardware (headset or speaker/car kit) to be able to do hands free communication.

I think the Acura TL comes with a Bluetooth card integrated into the speaker system. You probably just have to tune the radio to a certain channel (not sure, just guessing)
It's not as simple as tuning your radio to a certain frequency. To make BT work properly, you need not only a bluetooth receiver, but the software that will enable you to "pair" your phone with the BT receiver. The site you found shows alot of adapters that have built in speakers that will transmit the sound via "bluetooth" to the unit. There currently is not a bluetooth kit I've seen for cars that are not BT from the factory. I work with computers, and actually work with testing BT software and have yet to hear of an aftermarket kit that is available for your vehicle that will automatically integrate it into your existing stereo.

Example: My co-worker has the Sony Erricson BT phone and drives a BMW 750iL. His car has a built in (ancient) Motorola kit into the car. He was able to buy a kit that someone converted from their newer models of the BT kit and integrated it into the older models of cars. My point is, the kit he bought was a factory kit that was modified for an older vehicle. The reason why his car can accept this functionality is also because he has the main phone components installed in the car.

I hope this isn't confusing, but I believe that Acura did hit the nail on the head for NAV unit functionality and Voice recognition as being the best one out there with the added bonus of BT. Nissan is still a bit behind IMO Honda's technology developments. Not to take ANYTHING away from the cars themselves, but I do believe that Nissan is playing catch up when it comes to computer technology integration into the cars.

I hope this helps.

ok so I guess I'm wrong......that unit actually looks pretty good. My only question is how much will that cost just so you can have your BT enabled phone be used as a speakerphone in your car?

The factory units I've seen that have BT also have voice recognition (which may be novel to some, but i find quite frivolously fun to have).

my dilemma is Price for speaker phone(tellphone 4000)>BT earpiece which can keep your phone conversations private and still wire free!

Theres more than this kit out there. Motorola, Celllink, Ericcson etc. also have Bluetooth "car kits" that will integrate into your existing car audio system and work with pretty much any Bluetooth phone (all depends on what handsfree profile your phone uses.... aka software version)

All Acura (and other car manufactures) really did is install one of these kits at the factory for you. Nothing to fancy...nothing we all can't do on our own.

Bluetooth headsets and car kits are not to far apart in price. Its a matter of preference and what you want them to do for you. The more they do, the more they cost. Some of the car kits ive seen store the entire phone books, mute music automatically till the call has ended...etc.

I have a Bluetooth enabled phone and have also purchased a Bluetooth ear piece and I love it! I may one day go to the car kit but for now, this set up suits me fine and I too, enjoy my privacy.

I also work with computers (for a living) and enjoy seeing these new gadgets come out. I seem to hear and see it all working for a large software company, since thats what we do, develope technology.

Papa,

My previous post may have been misleading, I do understand that the BT car kits are the only thing that Acura installed into their vehicles, but it takes more than that to have voice recognition for your AC controls and radio controls!

As for working with computers (for a living) I get the privilege of seeing the BT technology being developed and tested and to see what new products (computer wise) our chips and software are being installed in. My first hand experience with BT has proven to me that it is a GREAT replacement for wireless technologies out there.

I look forward to watching the BT technology develop further so data transfer bandwidth increases. As for now being able to pair your phone with your in car stereo system seems like an expensive option just for a speaker phone that everyone riding along with you can hear the conversation. Last thing I need is to answer a call from my wife and have my co-workers here her tell me that she wants me to come home for an afternoon quickie!

All I know is that once BT technology catches on more in the consumer realm of real world applications, a hands-free earpiece (wired or wireless) is the easiest and most convenient option IMO.

Man I miss those! You must be a newlywed

Oh yeah....Bluetooth thread, right.

I agree with you, earpiece is the way to go, for my needs. Thats why I opted for the Bluetooth ear piece over the car kit. I should of just got both since work was paying for it

Oh well, live and learn.

OK BT is easily done with a number of kits. Motorola makes one, I have a Nokia ck-7 and it suffers from echo (on the callers side) pretty badly. So does the lower end Nokia kit. Cant say for the Moto, I will try next and report. BTW it is way cooler than "built in speakerphone esp with voice dial
