I test drove the A4 and an A6 when I was shopping for my G and you say there's not much of a difference in power around town... That's not true at all. The G feels significantly more powerful and is much more fun to drive IMO. The A4 was way too cramped too.

I have always loved the look and ride if my G so I don't think I will be getting a Audi anytime soon!
No, your friend has a very typical Audi. VWs (same company) are the same. Per JD Power and Associates, Audi and VW have ranked near the bottom in terms of long-term dependability for years now. They're sexy cars and give the appearance of being well built, but they're not. My friend averages $2K a year in repairs on his 05 A6 4.2. His story is not uncommon.

So far on my Jeep I have only had to replace the air filter with a K&N one and put gas in it. NOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW an A4 has less space inside than our G series.
Sorry, I would disagree on the Jeep part. I traded in my 02 A4 for the Jeep and it was the worst trade I've ever made. Jeeps aren't reliable at all (check engine on the way home, water leaking in the cabin from the ceiling, front air damn falling off and windshield cracked within two weeks of ownership without hitting rocks or anything). I loved my A4. Reliability was good for the time I had it. I also loved the quattro (live in WI), never got stuck in snow.

To OP, Audi's are on the upper side for maintenance (nothing beats Japan on cost of ownership), but it does offer some nice features and it is turbo which opens up possibility for mod bug

I been working at Audi and Porsche dealership for the last 2 years. The 09+ A4 are the best for reliability the 08 and earlier modals are not the greatest. The new S4's are awesome with the supercharged V6 if you have $50k to spend but i wouldnt buy an 08 or earlier model A4, i see them come in for service all the time and they are expensive as hell to fix.

IMO an A4 is a downgrade from a G35, even though they do look nice. If you're dead set on upgrading from your G, I'd go with a BWM 335i or M3...

I've had a B5 S4, a B6 S4, and almost bought a D2 S8. Before the Audis, I had 4 VWs. Each of them needed constant work; keep in mind that I din't drive particularly hard either.

I did the work on all cars myself and still could not believe how much money I was putting into repairs every 6 months. Not maintenance... REPAIRS. These were 3-4 year old cars that would need $600-$1000 every 6 months for things that I've never had to replace on any other car.

I think they are fantastic looking cars, but I would not consider one as a DD until they get their isht together. The only thing worse than the reliability is the customer service at any dealership... which is why I just started fixing the cars myself.

German engineering doesn't mean anything if the product is manufactured by the lowest bidder.

OP, if you're at 128k and haven't done anything but oil changes...

Time to change the spark plugs, trains fluid, diff fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and pcv valve!

My dad recently purchased a 2011 A4 2.0T quattro. It's a fun car when you're not driving in a straight line with your foot down. I would say if you're looking for more fuel economy, and A4 would be great. I stuck one into a corner at 65mph with my dad in the car and it held, no Traction Control kick, and only a slight understeer push. The 2.0T it uses is based on the same one that's been in the MKV GTI since 2004. It's epically reliable. Touted somewhere as one of the ten best engines of..something...I can't remember where...I think Audi's 4.2 V8 was on that list too.

Typical VQ driver answer: YOU'RE NOT DRIVING FAST ENOUGH *****.
