OK, so I don't feel that bad! If that had to be shipped up here...would cost the same.

I picked mine up locally for $25.. $100 is high to me, considering you could probably purchase a Magnaflow straight through race muffler (glasspack style) for $60 and have a shop weld it in for $20... Thats what I run now, I like it better than my coupe mid.

my first mod experience...

...didn't go so well!

Took the midpipe to my local shop and when he attempted to line it up, he was convinced it was 2-3 inches short! But at the same time, it wasn't flush flange to flange because of the huge sedan resonator...either that I unknowingly bought a 350Z midpipe...are they distinguishable by a serial number or something?

Of course, to make matters worse, the flange on the stock muffler was so badly rusted that he said he would have to cut it off and weld the two (muffler+ midpipe) together with a small section of pipe ...he suggested I go find an aftermarket muffler so that they could be bolted together.

So, my questions are...

1) Did I make a rookie mistake and/or get sold the wrong thing?
2) What are some good options for inexpensive, relatively stock sounding mufflers?

That sounds strange to me. The shop may be trying to get more money out of you.

The coupe midpipe should be a perfect fit. The Z one is 6 inches shorter, not 2-3... So how it could be 2-3 is a mystery to me. I would ask them if they could jack it up so you could take a look yourself.

^^^^^

see, my thought is that because the sedan resonator is so large (and in the way...it really protrudes out), he couldn't line it up properly and then said "it doesnt fit".

to be honest, this is a bit of a fly-by-night shop...i need to take this to a decent place!

one other thing..he said he could move the muffler back to make it fit, but then my rear lip would actually melt/burn...I'm guessing he's right about that.

The size of the resonator doesn't matter. The length of the pipes are exactly the same.

Sedan midpipe = More resonator, less piping
Coupe midpipe = Less resonator, more piping

Both are still the same length. I'd definitely take it to another shop.

^This!

Even if it did tuck the tips a little (and it shouldn't) it won't melt your bumper. My tips are tucked because I swapped rear bumpers with an 05 which has a little bit of a lip compared to the 03 rear bumper. So even though my exhaust didn't move, the tips ended up a little "tucked" under the new bumper.
I've been running like that for over a year with no problems with melting or ****.

Given the flange issue on the muffler side, do you guys have any suggestions?

Do you think a decent muffler shop could cut and weld a new flange on the muffler to connect to the midpipe flange?

Welding a new flange should be no problem.

You definetly need to go to a better shop. These are not issues for good shop.

Hope I dont get ripped off when I go to get mine installed.

I personally like it better than the coupe mid-pipe, its basically the smallest resonator you can get away with on the stock muffler. The tone is a little deeper at low RPM, and very coupe-like from about 2500rpm+

Heres a vid I found of a blue 06 sedan with that setup, I have HR-Y and Z-Tube so mines a tad more aggressive.
