Rear ended- How much $

Got rear ended last night (fairly hard, person who hit me got towed). Any ideas on the repair costs? If my insurance pays for it, they are going to cut a check. I want to make sure it reflects the true cost to fix it. Anyone else had the entire bumper replaced and if so how much? Thanks

Did the other person not have insurance. Why are you having to claim it if it wasnt your fault

I had the same thing but no structural damage. ITs going to cost me close to $450.

Re: Rear ended- How much $

Had my bumper driven into with no visual damage on the bumper except for a small scratch on a trunk lid corner. It cost ~$4000.

Take it and get it estimated. In my case the trunk lining was all screwed up and I needed frame work. And you couldn't tell anything was wrong by look at the car (until you opened the trunk and saw the buckled floor, that is)

Re: Rear ended- How much $

Thanks all- It's looks like the other drivers insurance will pay for it (assuming the other driver agrees with my assessment of the accident). The initial estimate is $470 which seemed low. They said it was preliminary and that if the body shop finds more damage (unseen structural) they will re-do the claim. The trunk lid is slightly mis-aligned, and the bumper is has major damage. I didn't even think to look at the trunk floor, thanks for the tip.

Just looked at my trunk floor. It appears to have buckled quite a bit. Shouldn't the floor be completely flat? Let me know. Thanks

This was how mine looked after I got rearended:

Inside the trunk:

Inside the trunk:

The only visible damage from outside was this small scratch:

...and this part of the bumper (which was EASILY clipped back on so you could see nothing wrong)
<img src = "http://www.astralprojection.com/forums/freshalloy/images/112_1286.jpg">

...My bodyshop quote was for $3100, The claims adjuster awarded me $4100, and the work came to $3600.

...Incidentally, the claims adjuster was amazed at how much damage had been done with very little externally visual.

Good luck!

Re: Rear ended- How much $

...Make sure given that your trunk floor is buckled that the bodyshop allows time for framework too. Make sure you take it to a GOOD place, a place that works on high end cars like lexus and bmw etc, not a joe schmoe bodyshop (It matters because they're going to have to paint-match the new bumper and you don't want it to stick out like a sore thumb) If you were rear-ended then the other driver is automatically at fault, so don't worry about that stuff. Just make sure you get a quote sufficient to pay for the amount of the damage. You'll need frame work, you should request all parts be new vs repaired, and make sure the bodyshop adjusts the trunklid again afterward, mine still looks a little off even though they did an a-1 job on all the rest.

Ok, your story and pictures just scared the crap out of me. I too was rear-ended-by an acquaintance-and my bumper had a scratch, was slightly bent out like yours and also popped back in w/o a problem. I let it go and didn't worry about it until I saw this. I just ran out to my car and pulled up my trunk mat to find....everything was just fine. My panick is just now easing....

Re: Rear ended- How much $

Whether you intend on making an insurance claim or not after stuff like this, it really does make sense to take the car to a body shop for a once-over. Whenever the bumper is hit and unrepaired it is left a lot more ineffective for the next time. I mean, they're supposed to absorb impact, that's what they are for, but all too often especially with newer cars it's a one-shot deal. It will do a good job of protecting occupants and the rest of the car the first time but next time it won't be nearly as effective. One thing to try after something like this is to put your knee on the bumper cover in the middle (or wherever the impact was) and push the bumper. The bumper cover shouldn't really have any space behind it, so it shouldn't really move a whole lot. In my case the bumper looked fine but when I did this it was like there was nothing behind the bumper cover any more. Wouldn't have worked real well the next time I got rear ended.

I'm glad noone is hurt in any of these stories.

Re: Rear ended- How much $

There is a space between the G35 rear bumper cover and the steel bar behind it. I don't know why they design it that way. Any slight bump means a dented and/or cracked bumper cover that has to be replaced at a cost of about $800.

My 2000 Maxima had a bumper cover that was flush with the bar, and it took several rear-end bumps from morons without visible damage or very little damage. My G35 got hit in a parking lot by an older Chrysler with a flush bumper cover that had no damage, I needed a new bumper cover.
