i didn't use a machine but i purchased a set of assorted grit wetsand paper and used every grit on there and this spot didn't budge lol

^You try a 3M kit on it yet?

If you do, you'll have to keep a handle on buffing them or have them sprayed with clear to keep them from yellowing back again, but at least it will tell you if they're salvageable

just get the ebay ones they're like 150$ plus 5$ for sillicone and you'll have brand spanking new headlights with oem fitment
