New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
Re: New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
That means you have to rev more to get more power out of it...the redline has shifted to 7000 from 6500 and peak torque is down to accomodate the changes in the engine. Basically, we need to wait for the dyno to see the effects but chances are, the autos are better mated with the 280hp engine vs the 298 hp engine which a manual can better take advantage of since its probably a peakier engine. Either way, you will have fun in both cars.

"All the suggestions are greatly appreicated, and as for my driving, I consider myself a mild driver but I can be aggresive when condition demands it. I am not a weekend racer but I want a car than can perform when I really need it. I am own automatics all my life but I feel like a kid in a toy store everytime I get to drive a stick. I am not sure the this phase will wear off if I actually own a stick. "

Re: New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
oh no, flame war part 2 "auto vs 6mt"
remember part 1 was "'03/'04 vs '05"
I drive 60+ miles everyday on the 605 and 405 fwy but then all my life I drive manual, so I am used to it.
I like the 6mt b/c the hand brake is on the console and not on the pedal side. It looks more sporty too. But then the manual doesn't have the rear a/c vents and the auto retracting steering wheel when the engine is off.

iLLG35 -- No, not to you...I was responding to shodog's comments about us "wimps" with the 5AT's...ha ha ;-) I think you've proven to all of us what a few more mods on a G35 5AT Sedan can do...how many 6MT's can you blow away? ;-) Has anyone called you a wimp for driving a 5AT??? I don't think so.

Re: New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
Don’t get me wrong, the 5AT is a great Tranny. Much better than many of the other 4AT transmissions out there. The 6.2 sec 0-60 time is the best I have seen for the 5AT. So I’ll use the best 5.6 second 0-60 time for the 6mt. Consider that at 60mph you’re roughly traveling 8.8 feet per tenth of a second. So a 6/10 second advantage would translate into a 52.8 feet difference at 60mph. That is a huge difference in acceleration.
I have driven the 5at hard on a number of occasions. Although you get the illusion of a manual, it’s not quite the same feeling. The 5AT manumatic lags when shifted. You will never get that rush you feel in dropping from 5th to third with the 6MT
Everybody chooses a car that fits their need for various reasons. If you chose an automatic transmission for your G35, then good for you. But by that same token you have to accept that it doesn’t have the same level of performance that the 6MT offers.

Yeah 51,000 miles I am still having fun with my auto. It's not a bad compromise especially when the tranny learns your driving style.I like manuals as well but this SoFla traffic can get bad - it's not quite to LA or Bay Area levels yet but it's getting there.

HAHA man its all love between us G peoples, your absolutely 100% right LOL , everyone compliments my car but i know myself what i want, and i cant imagine if i modded it like i did on a 6spd, it would be FAST, but another thing is my auto and my MM shifting is on point every shift with a simple 8 or 10 wire grounding kit witht he ECU wires, helps alot and i beat numerous people because of the crisp fast shifting of the auto RIGHT NOW, def. not when stock, my car by any means is nowhere near stock, its an animal for a G sedan and i cant imagine what a TT one or SC one would be, and again im comparing a stock g sedan to modded, i dont think my cars fast right now but then when i go up agaisnt someone it quickly reminds me! Im just on a whole other level i guess, what can i say, im a nut =)
Shodog your right man, but simple things for the auto G tranny can make it much quicker then a manual, but i rather get my driving skill up and do it on a manual, its another challenge =)

Re: New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
51,200 miles later still enjoying the auto. the auto is not bad especially after the tranny learns your driving style. Like "ILLG" I have ran against manual coupes, and a Z or two if there is room they aren't going to pull away. If I get in front they usually don't get the opportunity to pass. BTW. at 50k this car runs harder than ever.

Well if driving a RS6, new M5 or E55 with their automatics is being a wimp. Then I won't mind being the biggest of them all!!

Re: New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
For the record, I DO have to carry customers around in my back seat (I'm a Realtor), and most don't even notice that it's a manual transmission for the first few minutes, if I'm driving smoothly. Also, most of my clients and co-workers really like the contrast between the feeling of a luxury/semi-luxury car and the sportiness of the MT. It gives a certain "uniqueness" to the car, and makes it stand out from the other "Realtormobiles" they've ridden in daily. Also, most of them think this car costs a lot more than it does.
Last weekend, I took a couple in their 80's out to view property, and they just LOVED the MT - reminded them of earlier times when luxury cars (40's & 50's Packards, Cadillacs, Lincolns) had MT's. Several times the old lady said "let's hear it go", and she really liked it when I ran it up to redline a couple of times. Her first comment was "THATS why you bought this car - you're not foolin' me" the first time I got on it, to merge on the freeway.
They both reminisced about the cars they've owned, and their last MT - a 1960's Mercedes SL roadster (280, I think) that they dearly loved. The old guy said "enjoy that manual transmission as long as you can, when you get old like me with bad knees, you'll wish you'd done a lot more things like that while you were able". I'm finding the MT to be a conversation starter, myself. Oh, yeah - I sold them a house, too!
Just another viewpoint - and I'm now wondering why I was ever concerned that the 6MT would be a negative when using this car for business ?? Anyway, IMHO you can't go wrong with either tranny, as long as it's in a G35, you're set. Enjoy what you buy.

Re: New 05 6sp MT or 5sp Auto
If your going to buy a sport sedan and it is offered in a Manual Transmission why would you buy an Automatic? Maybe you need one because the wife can't drive stick which is fine and dandy but your losing out on a significant amount of performance. It doesn't take too long to teach someone to drive a stick. My wife already knew how before I met her.
The E55 and RS6 are not offered with a Manual Transmission. These cars are so fricken fast that difference between manual and auto are negligable. There is no comparison between The SMG transmission offered on the new M5 and the Automatic tranny in the G35.
