Has anyone cut open a OEM 03-06 sedan muffler?

It will definitely be a little quieter with the stock y-pipe and midpipe. I may actually swap on the stock midpipe and see how it sounds.
Nice work, haha. Sounds good. I still don't think it sounds quite like the coupe though. I don't think you can get that sound without using a muffler with baffles in it like a Flowmaster. The baffles is what gives the coupe that warble.

Swapped on the 03/04 "suitcase" resonator tonight because the drone under certain loads during normal driving was just a bit too much for my 37 y/o ears. For the younger crowd, they'll be in love with my orginial setup. For people that need to haul family and clients around, it wouldn't be ideal IMO.
With that said, this is it and God does it sound good. It still sounds the same as it did prior under neutral revving, it's just the initial drone hit and volume has been cut by about 30% under normal driving. There still is some drone under certain loads, but it's pleasing to the ears like the smooth sound of healthy V8. It's mellow, deep, and powerful and absolutely no rasp. I love it. It sounds so much better (and louder) than my previous setup of the HR y-pipe, 05/06 sedan midpipe, and 03/04 stock muffler which sounded great in it's own.
03/04 owners, if you have the means, tools, and ability, gut your muffler if you want one of the best sounding daily driving G exhausts.
Someone will have to cut into their 05/06 to see if a valve is there. I think there is because while the 05/06 cars do have a bit exhaust noise, the design of the muffler appears to me to be generally the same, just longer canister to muffle noise from the smaller resonator. For you 05/06 owners, it's to test if you have the valve or not. Simply start the car and put your hand over either exhaust pipe. If only one is flowing, then muffler has the valve.
BTW, for those that were wondering, the 03/04 sedan midpipe weighs about 12lbs more than the 05/06 sedan midpipe. The 05/06 midpipe's resonator is actually half the size of the 03/04's resonator.

The 05/06 muffler is longer (3" I believe), but it fits in the same space and the midpipe lengths between the 03/04 and 05/06 are the same. The way Nissan fit the larger canister in was by revamping the rear bolt-on exhaust hanger.

I have the HR Y-pipe. It adds a little more sound.
I posted a bit earlier that I have an 05 sedan, and both sides flow at idle. And both pipes measure the same depth at 22 inches. I think nissan got rid of the valve in 05 when they redesigned the muffler. If someone would donate a mufler I would gladly cut into it to see if there is a valve. I would like to mod it and reweld it too. I have all the tools for the job. I would pay the shipping cost.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods

I have an 05 muffler you can have for your research. Where are you located? If you aren't close to me and are willing to pay shipping I'll be happy to send it to you, I'm in Austin, Tx. It was going in the trash anyway and I'd be glad to donate it to the cause.
I'll figure out how to properly package it and let you know how much it will cost. I'm seriously considering just wrapping it in several layers of bubble wrap, taping it up, and sending it out that way.

And Ive also checked my 03 and indeed exhuast only flows out of one side at idle. Theres a little bit coming out the other one too but compared to the primary pipe, its practically nothing.
