2003 Sedan Service Pricing Question

I just brought my 2003 Sedan in for service and I've hit 105,000 miles, so they want to replace a bunch of parts. Here is what they recommend: spark plugs, belt, and shocks. Between all of those parts, an oil change, alignment, rotation, and labor they've quoted me $1,500. Sounds a bit steep, doesn't it?

Do you know how to turn a ratchet?

Spark plugs: $60
Belt: $20
Shocks: $200
Oil: $30
Alignment: $80 (free tire rotation?)
=$390

You'd save a lot of money if you could do all of that yourself. I'm sure even someone on the forum would do all of that for a few hundred (minus the alignment).

Depends if you really need to get those exact parts changed.
Whats the maintenance record of the car? I think you might need to change some other fluids too based on the history of your vehicle.

I was quotes at ~$700 for just the parts and labor for a spark plug change at my dealership.

Asked around and could get it done for $350 parts and labor at a trusted local shop.
I'd visually inspect the belts and see if they have any deep cracks for the serpentine belt and to see if there is any signs of stripping on the AC belt. If not you wont need to change those.

I told them not to do the shocks, but go ahead with everything else and was quoted $500. Can't believe they want $1k for shocks and labor.

And yes, the belt is showing signs of cracking so it needs to be changed.

Anyone in the Ventura, CA area want to make a few bucks and install my shocks? Or if anyone knows a good shop around here it would be much appreciated.

Wow you paid 500 for belts and spark plugs? Guy in SD who works on our Gs did all that for me with parts and labor was like 130-175 tops?

Find out in ur area who works on ur cars i know a few ppl in the forums that live in the LA area who would do it for cheaper.

Yeah, $500 for belts, spark plugs, oil and filter change, air filter change, alignment, and tire rotation.

Totally ripped off; I'm never going there again. I was basically forced into paying their exorbitant prices because they already started changing the spark plugs before I signed off on anything, saying "It was manufacturer required to change at my mileage."

If you know any mechanics or good shops in the LA area I'd be very grateful for the info. I'm going to start calling around tomorrow to look for good prices on the shocks and associated labor.

Nothing in your area OP but if you venture down to Northern LA, call CarZone in Van Nuys off the 405:

its illegal to work on cars without the owners consent.. i think ur just saying this cuz u got the short end of the stick... it happens.. but then again dealers wont work on cars without telling you.. even if its a mandatory thing... what if u dont have money? yea...

next time just look around a bit im sure u can find an honest mechanic somewhere. i know Shane does work in the LA area.

i think his username is ShanesG? i could be wrong.

QFT

I love this shop and don't even live in Cali. It's owned and run by former Nissan and Infiniti Master techs I believe and they are a great group of guys. When I was in Cali in Sept., they offered to clear a spot for me at a moment's notice to install my ARTs. That's what I call customer service.

yeah, its tough finding a good mechanic that knows and guarantees their work. Im trying to get my clutch/flywheel/clutch fluid replaced before thanksgiving or after. If anyone knows a good shop in Long Beach or around the area, I'd really APPRECIATE IT!
