SES Light and Timing Chain Question

Hey Guys,

I'm brand new to the forum. I had an 03 G35 for a while, loved the car, never had a problem with it, recently replaced it with an 05 G35 sedan 6MT with only 35K miles. Couple days ago I had a SES light come on. I went to my mechanic and he told me the code said, CAM POSITION and Advanced timing something or other...he tells me that it's likely the timing chain problem. I know timing chains on these cars are not cheap and I'll be looking at over $1000 to fix this. I have never heard of this problem on these cars. I know they're known for tensioner problems which will cause the chain to rattle, which needs to be replaced. I'm thinking that maybe its a sensor issue? Has anyone ever had timing thrown off because of a chain that was perfectly quite? Car runs fine as well, just the SES light. Thanks in advance for any input. Sorry if this has been covered, I have searched all over the net and couldn't find anything. Although I did learn that CAM sensors are common and that there are 2 of them, one by the Throttle body and one on the firewall passenger side. Maybe I should replace those first, just hate to spend $300-$400 bucks on those and find out I have to spend another $1500 on a timing chain.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know the code. He told me it said something like cam position sensor, timing advanced. He reset the code for me. I'm gonna drive the car for a bit see if it comes back. If it does Ill be sure to get the exact code number and post it here. I was just curius if what the mechanic said wad feasable. The chain doesn't seem to be making any noise on cold starts. We had a 04 Maxima with a timing chain issue and sounded like someone was banging a hammer under the hood for the first 2 min on cold start. Then it got quite. Car still drove perfectly fine other then the noise. No SES lights or anything. That's when I learned about the tensioners on these engines being a weak point. Either way Ill be sure to report over the next couple days what happens.

Well i will tell you this much, the timing chain guide issue was only on the nissan side and not on the infiniti side due to the fact that all of infiniti engines are assembled and built in Japan, most of the nissan engines with exception of the z cars and gtr are assembled and built in America. They used a different material on their chain guides than we used in our cars. Thumbs up for Infiniti...Cam position sensors are a common issue. I did 2 of them yesterday and 1 on Saturday all on different cars.if you do come across the code it would be very helpful in finding the problem.
