Idling Issues

Not sure whats wrong with the car but lately Ive been having strange idling issues. For example, when i come to a stop and close my windows while the car is still in D I notice my car idle drop down to 500 rpm and it feels like the car is going to stall. Also, when I start off the car sometimes the idle is not smooth for couple seconds until it warms up and drops to the 650-700 rpm.

I changed the belts and replaced the k&n filter but Im not sure if these issues started right after I did it. I was thinking maybe I put the belts to tight but they feel just right. Car has 82k miles. Any advice?

prob same as mine you need to clean the throttle body. Its supposed to let a certain amount of air past the throttle body blade at idle and over time it gets that black build up inside that blocks the air passing through needed at idle. My 04x has 80K miles on it and sometimes dies when I start it. No other problems or symptoms I just need to get around to cleaning my TB.

If the idle drops and lights dim when you roll your windows up or down, it is most likely a grounding issue. I had similar issues which were eliminated after installing my custom grounding kit.

Check out the reviews and PM me if you are interested:

Probably not it but just throwing it out there, but it could possibly be a very slight vacuum leak.

When the engine is hot the idle is around 600-625 rpm which I think is a little lower then before, when you close the window or turn on the rear defroster the engine idle drops to 500 rpm.

When the engine is cold it will idle in the normal 1000 rpm but sometimes it will idle rough. If you close the window the idle will drop by 100 rpm.

check your air intake between the air meter and throttle body. Could have unmetered air coming in ?

Ok guys first things first, cleaning your throttle body will not keep your car from shutting off after start up. You need to have the dealer do an idle air volume relearn procedure on it and also clear the ecu self learn. G35CO, you pretty much summed it up in the original post when you said you cleaned the k&n filter. If you for some reason put too much oil back on the filter, it sounds like some oil residue got inside the mass air flow sensor. Something as small as a hair could have gotten on the hot wire when the air filter was removed and will cause the car to run like s**t. remove the 2 screws from the mass air flow sensor and clean it thoroughly and reinstall it and that will most likely take care of your issue. Hope this helps,if not let me know....

I replaced the old k&n filter with a new one but i can clean the maf sensor.

I dont understand why when you roll up the window or turn on the rear defroster the idle drops to 500 rpm. Is the alternator not producing enough power? I put new battery last year. If the belts are too tight or not tight enough will it cause these symptoms?

I can't think of how the belt tension would change anything unless it's overtightened then it could burn up you idler pully bearings.
