Would You Have Rather Bought the Coupe?
I must admit, I'd rather own the coupe than the sedan. Again, please don't get me wrong. I LOVE MY SEDAN TO DEATH. But I feel the coupe is easily the best designed coupe on the market. Personally, I bought the sedan only because the coupe was too impractical. I need a car with four doors and can get through snow. The AWD sedan fits the bill. But for looks the coupe is the way to go.
So, take my little poll. Did you buy the sedan out of practicality (as practical as a G35 can be, that is) or because you genuinely liked it more than the coupe.
Please only sedan owners should take the poll. Thanks!

Back in march of 03, I located the only ready for sale 6MT coupe in the five western states at the time. I called the dealer and reserved the car, then showed up 2 hours latter with a check to drive off with it. Much to my surprise when I drove it, it was no where as fun to drive as the Z, a 05 sport suspension equipped car it was not. I was still willing to buy it, but my tall torso ment my head was jammed in the ceiling because it had a sun roof like pretty much all coupes do. I sat in that thing for over a hour rationalizing how I could live with negitive head room. I apologized, collected my check and walked away. My sedan has served me well, but the coupe would still serve my eye's a whole lot better. I would have a 350Z first and foremost, but my wife steadfastly refused to let me bring one home.

I pulled rank and voted anyway , but seriously I owned a Sedan b4 the Coupe so I have a little insight into the diff.
I felt the same as you Fotodad some time ago when I had the Sedan. So I traded for the Coupe, now I miss the practicallity of the Sedan with better rear seat access, bigger trunk, more upright seating, etc etc etc.
They are both great rides but for my needs, the Sedan is the ride. It's prolly more to do with age than anything else in my case anyway.
I wish I could have kept the Sedan and had both like JaTe, but alas I couldn't.
Enjoy the Sedan, bro, it has the best of both worlds.

Yup, I was a salivating coupe pre-order guy way back in August 2002. Had a Black/Charcoal, 6MT, NAV on the way with my name on it. When the 5AT coupes started showing up first, I drove one and was not impressed at all with the car. It actually felt slower, and MUCH heavier (felt like more than the 150 lb. difference) than the sedan. The ride was also much louder and rough. To be expected on a sports coupe, but the negatives did not seem to create a benefit in the responsiveness/feel of the car.
So I re-drove a sedan to make sure I wasnt hallucinating. I wasnt. The coupe did not bring anything to the party except "looks" in my opinion. And I actually prefer the look of the sedan now. It has a perfect balance of sportiness and class.

To be honest, I wasn't even looking to buy a car when I got the G! This was back in May 2002 (I think mine was the 1st IP G35 sold in Edmonton). I went for a test drive since I liked its looks, and fell in love during the drive! I signed the papers right then and there! (I actually spent the entire next week before delivery, driving all of the competition to make sure I made the right choice!...I did!)
So, before all the positive reviews, reputation for bang-for-the-buck, before the 6MT, before the Coupe and the AWD...
I believe that many have since been and are now sold because of various reasons including the factors above. I felt vindicated later by the overwhelming positive reviews and admiring looks over the course of over a year. Maybe we early G35 owners are the TRUE enthusiasts!
Anyway, I love the looks of the coupe (except for the big-butt bumper), and also love the sound of the exhaust. But I've never been sorry that I got the sedan! And over 2 1/2 years later, the G still get admiring looks from strangers!
That said, I certainly wouldn't mind also having a Coupe in the garage as well!

OK - I'm not in what I perceive to be the general age group resident here. I'm older (but still have some spirit left), co-parent of two kids who have their own wheels, and at the time in my life where practicality can mostly be thrown out the window for pure fun. Trust me - you get at least two chances in your life for this... :-)
But a man's gotta know his limitations...
We'd already settled on a Mazda6 for my wife when my company came up with a budget for me to lease a car. I wanted something with 4-wheel or AWD since I'm a salesman and have to be available for my clients on a moment's notice - and that means getting off Lawn Guyland and into the depths of New Jersey or Connecticut.
I didn't want a truck - already owned an Explorer and a Jeep Cherokee and wanted to more than bull my way through bad weather. I also wanted some luxury - heck I just traded in my black boring mini-brick cell for an LG-7000 camera phone and was on a roll! :-) When I tried to go conservative, a close friend grabbed me by the collar and said enough already - go spend some money and get something you'll enjoy.
I started researching what was (I thought) available to me in AWD - Volvo, Audi, BMW, and Infiniti. The Volvo (I drove the V60) was like driving an old shoe - I've had a 760 Turbo and always found them comfortable. I looked at the BMW3 but felt it was small. The Audi was out of my price range.
I drove up to an Infiniti dealership one night, walked into the showroom, and my heart nearly burst when I sat in a 2004 Infiniti G35 Sedan. It was a delicious Ivory Pearl, deep willow interior with a dealer installed glossy wood package.
It fit - it was luxurious, it had the reputation, it had the AWD, damn if it didn't have the design, the looks, and th grooming. And it was within 6 bucks of my budget!
I had to come back to test drive it and did the following Sunday - I've never felt as intimidated by a car as I did that G35. It had been years since I'd driven anything that muscular. I had to have it. Had to. And struck a deal for the one I actually had sat in when I first entered the showroom.
So to answer the question, the coupe simply melted me - the gray one I had seen outside in the sun looked as if it was doing 200 mph while still standing still. Its lines, the color, the dual exhausts that practically stuck their tongues out at the competition - it was all hard to walk away from. But I needed the AWD and the 4 door was a bonus since I also transported clients from time to time.
I've only had the car a week and have driven nearly 1,000 miles with no complaints. Every time I look at it, I fall in love again with it's lines. I remember when my wife first saw it when we came to pick it up, she stopped dead in her tracks as if she never had seen - or like myself never owned - anything that appeared that glamorous. I spent the first minutes walking along the outer border, brushing the pearl finish with the tips of my fingers and then sitting inside just absorbing the cabin.
Then again, even though I'm incredibly happy with the sedan, I know that one day I'll own the coupe.
Because I have to. :-)

I think that is absolutely thee best written post describing an owners pleasure over owning a G35. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and emotions.
You may describe yourself as "older," but with an attitude like that you are a youngster. I'm 47 years-old. And while I don't think I'm on my last legs, I do see the "end" much more clearly than when I was in my 20s and 30s. Reading your post made me appreciate even more my love for automobiles and, more specifically, my G35x.
And I agree with you, GAWDog, someday I'll own a coupe.
