Speedometer error?

I'm currently trying to stretch my MPG as far as I can, so I've been paying attention to my driving distances a lot. I've noticed that my job commute is 59 miles in my G, but in my last 2 cars, 1996 Altima and 2002 TL, the same commute measured at 60 miles.

Has anyone ever looked into this? I was thinking of using the mile markers on the Turpike as a measuring tool, but I tried that a few years ago in the Altima and found the markers to be inconsistent distances apart.

Any thoughts... or should I just get a life?

Re: Speedometer error?

You should get a GPS. Little room for doubt.

Damn man, why don't you move closer to where you live. That's gonna be alot of miles you be putting on your G annualy. Anyway, hope to find the solution to your problem.

Re: Speedometer error?

Been doing the commute 3 years now... problem is: I like my job, and I love my neighborhood. I've worked close to home before but it was the worst 18 months of my career life. I would rather drive an hour (each way) and enjoy my 8 hour day, than drive 15 minutes and hate 8 hours of each workday.

But I AM on the lookout for opportunities up in my 'hood.

What is the best and easiest way calculate mileage? What are some of your (meaning owners) methods used?

The best way would probably be to go to a shop with a dyno.

Re: Speedometer error?

I have a portable GPS and I can check the mileage accuracy. The GPS is very accurate. I also had a 2000 3.2 TL before my G. There was talk about the speedometer being off on that car. I saw proof of that using the GPS. I will check the next time I am out.
