Help oil in cyl 5 spark plug tube. Smoking and shake

Ok so we changed the spark plugs on my friends 04 g35x and we turned it on and it sounds like a tractor and is smoking. Pulled te code an it's a misfire. Is this normal or should we be concerned? Just burn the oil out of the tube or what?

Did one of the plugs get something on the tip? One of my tubes had oil, I got lint free cloth and made sure to get most of it out.

oil leak could of caused that coilpack to go bad.

The best thing about coilpacks is being able to swap them with another.

you got a miss on 5, swap coil packs on 5 to like 3. Clear codes and start it up again. If its missing on 3 then you got a dead coilpack, or somewhat dead. If you still have a miss on 5 then its likely you need to replace your valve cover gasket.

clean out any oil you see in the spark plug tube first...stick a tampon or some cloth on the end of a screwdriver

It is a random multiple miss fire on the scanner. We pulled the plug and cleaned it out then tried running it again and although better, it was still shakey and running rough (wasn't smoking though)

Pulled all the coil packs and none of the other spark plug tubes have oil in them. I am at a loss of what to do. ECU reset????

This is Wannabe6MT btw, posting on songles computer

Are all the individual wires lined up to correct coil packs.

was there any oil pooled around the plug when you pulled it out the 2nd time?

try this trick to see if the #5 coil is firing properly

No oil in the tube. I am thinking a coil pack may be bad, but am not really sure.

Was it running rough before you changed the plugs? If not the issue is probably not a coil pack.

was it running rough before the change. If not then more than likely you crossed wires putting back together. most likely harness to cyl 4 and 6. easy to mix those up. Does it have a bad fuel smell? SES light on and blinks?

if there was oil on the plug the first time, you probably have a bad spark plug tube grommet. its part of the valve cover gasket. you probably had smoke bc of the extra oil that ran onto the cylinder when you took the plug out. the random misfire could be caused by old plugs plus oil on the one causing it to foul out. it might be a small leak and been leaking for a while so you may not have seen any the second time you took it out.

SES light on and blinks, it did smell like bad fuel. Harnesses at the correct location.

Ok so we ripped everything out and put it back together. We think the problem was either:

A) the wires got mixed up between cylinders 4 and 6

or

B) the coil pack going into cylinder 3 was incredibly loose; using a smaller screw tightened it down better (anyone has any insight as to why the normal screw didn't fit, or why this would cause issues?)

anyway, car runs (semi) normal now, with the exception of my catalytic converter making some sketchy *** noises. I'm guessing this is from it generating an excessive amount of heat while we were running the car trying to burn the oil out.

Only question I have now is, can I drive a ~230 mile drive on a sh*tty cat converter? I need to drive back up to school soon and need to know if I need to leave the car at my home or if I can bring it back up to school.

Thanks for all the input and advice guys, you don't know how much I appreciate all of it!!

unless your cats are clogs (which i doubt they are) worst case scenario is you're just polluting the air
