Break-In RPMs over 4000
Break-In RPMs over 4000
I let my father drive my new g35x (750 miles) and he took it to 5,500 RPMs for about 2 seconds before I could stop him.
Does anyone know how bad this might be for the engine during the break-in period?

I would not lose any sleep over it. Just accelerating into traffic can cause you to exceed the 4,000 limit if you are not very careful.
Also, I highly doubt Infiniti would produce a product that could get severe damage from going over the 4000 limit for such a short period. Their intent is to discourage abuse of the engine before it has a chance to break in.
There are a number of people on this forum who have driven the vehicle with "pedal to floor" from the moment they left the dealership without any regard to the breakin. It just may mean that they get 100,000, miles out of the engine rather than 150,000.

Thanks FLFIR - appreciate the info.
I'm doing an Octane test on the car now. Just drove 270 miles to visit my brother for the holidays. Used 89 octane on the way down and got 19.6 mpg. 90% highway driving - no traffic and driving b/wn 70-80 most of the time. Just filled the car with 93 for the drive back to test difference in power & mpg. Will post results when I have them.

oh, and my friend had a nissan pathfinder (with the same engine as the G35), treated it like a piece of trash, changed the oil every 10,000 miles, red lined it all the time, and it still runs like a dream. No wonder our engine got ranked in the 10 best in the world for several years running.

Dont worry man your car will not blow up.
I didnt even let mine break in. After ~ 250 miles I redlined it just like you would after "break in" and my car runs like a champ. It dynoed 257 rwp with just an intake so dont be worried.

I redlined my car leaving the dealership(20 miles) and a few more times before 1200 miles. I am at 3200 now and time for an oil change. I will let you guys know if there are any problems.
OK. I drove back the exact same route - 270 miles going b/wn 70-80 with the tank filled with 93. I got 20.8 mpg - so, I got 1.2 mpg better with the 93. To be honest, the 89 caused no pinging and is anywhere b/wn 10-15 cents cheaper per gallon so I think I'll stick with the 89.
WAY too early to expect a flatline in the way of MPG. You need to re-try your test when the car has gone through a few more tanks. I think it took about 10 tanks before my MPG settled at a reasonably stable number.
Usually in a new car the MPG will rise steadily for the first 3k or so before settling somewhere.
