G35
~ TunerMax's Introduction & Progress Thread ~

Hey guys, I was a member for a while as "TunerMaxima3000", I finally took the leap and bought a G and plan to sell the Maxima in the spring, so now it`s just `TunerMax`

So I thought I'd take a minute to say to everyone a little more formally.

Background, my Maxima never saw serious performance mods, 'cause I never planned it to be that kind of car (fact is, it is a FWD auto and that's not going to change). I did do a whack of wiring, LED, and appearance mods. I am eager to get my paws on this new G to see where it goes!

Anniversary Edition Maxima:

If anyone's interested, here's the Progress Thread for that car, it needs updating badly:

Now here she is, my VERY DIRTY new 2003.5 G35 6MT, right now, just a clay mould in my driveway IMO:

LET THE MODDING BEGIN!!

-Matt

You are gonna put the G37 wheels on the G35 right? I used to have a 02 Maxima 6spd myself that I traded in for a G35X this summer.

I agree, I think they look awesome on our sedans. Good luck with your new 6-speed G!

170,000 km, a little high. Equates to about 106xxx Miles for my down south friends

Yes I'm going to mount them and see how they sit. I would like to do a lipped wheel now that I have a RWD, but that has been played out quite a bit in the past few years so I may just stick with the Enkeis..... we will see!

Thanks man, I put a lot into getting it cleanly modded, which is the route I plan to go with this G. It's nice to have some real power now though, the AE Maxima was only SAE 227hp, and with the automatic it was a bit of a slug in comparison to a manual, let alone compared to the 3.5.

It's nice to be here, hard to be a newb again, and lower then 10 post count is painful!!! I have a lot to learn, I'm currently hunting for a Factory Service Manual, anyone point me in the right direction? Or is that something I might have to purchase for this car?

Beautiful 5th gen. I used to have a modded i30 and I still hang out with the Maxima crowd. Definitely keep the G37 rims.

I pretty much did the same upgrade: AT VQ30 --> 6MT VQ35

I figured there was a pretty large conversion crowd (Maxima to G sedan)

The jump is drastic from the DE-K to the 3.5, especially Auto to Manual. I took the car joy-riding last night (plated of course) and man I don't regret the decision, save for an irritating TOB noise while idling, the car is awesome. I was surprised with the grip while cornering, even with these junk All season tires, it's hard to get it sideways without dumping the clutch or really revving it out. It has great balance, especially for a sedan.

I look forward to 19" with performance summers and Coilovers.

I also pulled the clock apart already to LED mod it LMAO

Yeah I have my pet peeves with the Maxima, big reasons for selling. The 5th gen turning circle is terrible, you have to basically 3 point turn into a parking spot. The suspension is poorly designed, even with suspension mods and Tein SS coilovers, it handles worse than a stock G35 Sedan Sport.

Combine that with an automatic and FWD, and I think I made the right choice to change the platform. All that said the Maxima is a fantastic car, especially the 02/03 with the 3.5 and 6speed, for the price they're incredible cars, just not what I want anymore, I hate FWD almost as much as I hate Automatic.

I was surprised at how torquey the G is, albiet, it does die off pretty drastic in the top RPM range. I hope some intake and exhaust work starts the process of 'airing' it out in the higher RPM range.
It's great for DD activities though, which are my plans so an SRI will do for now while I tackle the (IMO more important) visual items.
